Citizens: We weren't ready for major impact from Hurricane Matthew

An Oct. 5 news release declared: “Citizens is ready for Hurricane Matthew, Are You?”

Months later, Citizens — with 225,000 policyholders in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties — revealed it was not ready to respond to a major storm in South Florida. Companies Citizens had hired to provide independent claims adjusters for post-storm damage assessments supplied far fewer adjusters than Citizens requested.

Meet Your New Claims Inspector: A Drone

...
Instead of a ladder, the claims adjuster brought a drone. The small quadcopter — a helicopter powered by four rotors — hummed like a swarm of bees as it took off from the sidewalk.
...
Ditching the ladder
Travelers, Ragone’s homeowners insurer, is among companies using drones to inspect storm damage. Rather than climbing onto the roof, an insurance company representative pilots a drone. The drone takes pictures and video while the operator stays safely on the ground.

Insurance Assessment Using Drone Leaves Homeowner With Concerns

DENVER (CBS4) – As thousands of storm-related claims are being processed throughout the Denver area, one homeowner isn’t buying what insurance companies are trying to sell as a faster way to handle claims; Michael Clark wants to see a claims adjuster and not a drone.

“New technologies are great, but they’re not always appropriate, You’re not going to replace someone with boots on the ground,” said Clark.

Proposed Senate bill calling for hailstorm litigation reform finds favor in insurance industry

AUSTIN – Texas lawmakers have filed Senate Bill 10 in an effort to pass legislation that would decrease, or halt altogether, hailstorm litigation abuse.

....

Hail litigation has spiraled out of control in Texas, mainly because of a small group of bad actors who abuse the system,” said Hancock in a statement published Feb. 13. “Senate Bill 10 will address this problem, improve transparency and protect Texas consumers from sky-high premiums without infringing on their right to make an insurance claim or sue their insurance company when it's not holding up its end of a deal.”

Extended Range Forecast Of Atlantic Seasonal Hurricane Activity And Landfall Strike Probability For 2017

Extended Range Forecast Of Atlantic Seasonal Hurricane Activity And Landfall Strike Probability For 2017

June 1st Update

We have increased our forecast and now believe that 2017 will have approximately average activity. The odds of a significant El Niño in 2017 have diminished somewhat,
and portions of the tropical Atlantic have anomalously warmed over the past two months. While the tropical Atlantic is warmer than normal, the far North Atlantic remains colder than normal, potentially indicative of a negative phase of the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation. We anticipate a near-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the United States coastline and in the Caribbean. As is the case with all hurricane seasons, coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for them. They should prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much activity is predicted.

Insurance company deploys fleet of drones

Allstate Insurance plans to use a fleet of drones to help assess property damage claims across four states during the spring storm season. A fleet of drones will be at the ready in Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.  If the progress is successful, it will be considered for a wider rollout.

The multi-state launch is the company's largest use of drones to date and represents a major step forward in the use of aerial imagery for property damage assessment among insurers, according to Allstate.
