OK, now that I have absorbed these 7 pages of attempted debate, I am ready to assume the role of a member of the audience and to, and to cast my vote to the victor. I say "attempted debate" because only one side has stuck to the issue of "Partisan Politics". The other side has done nothing but attack and retreat and attack and retreat without ever offering up any justification for their position or for their political leanings.(Typical for their ilk.)

WINNERS ...
Kile, Justin, Newt, Rush, GW, Conservatives, Republicans, Americans, Patriots, Hard working moral responsible citizens, the-war-on-terror and the hardworking college student who got it and will never vote democrat again.

LOSERS ( as in SORE-LOSERMAN) ...
JimF, Olderthandirt, Tom Daschle, Bill and Hill, Algore, Liberals, Democrats, Socialists, Communists, Anarchists, Barbara Streisand, Tree huggers, Feminazi's, Eco-terrorists, The-war-on-drugs, welfare sucking illegal immigrants, and most of the democratic candidates in the last election.

I must admit that I was somewhat biased before reading these pages, but my conservative leaning was only strengthened by the words (from both sides) that these pages contain. The words from the right (Kile, Justin and Newt) contained support for their beliefs and I agree with most of what they feel. The words from the left (JimF and Mark) did not once tell WHY it was that they feel the way they do, but only contained attacks, self-absorbed, self-aggrandizing, instigating rhetoric that has become all too familiar from the left. The remarks from CCarr, Gale and Jennifer were for the most part neutral, and I applaud your ability to be remain calm. Mark, if you still can't be convinced to come over to our side, then you might want to help the image of your party. If this is true, I would first suggest that you invest in a spell checker. Some of your comments could not even be understood. Secondly, tell all of your democrat buddies to go on a diet and quit buying all of their clothes at K-mart. JimF, for the life of me, I just can't understand why there is enough people with leftist views to support a Democratic Party to begin with. When you compare the things they stand for to the things that the Republicans stand for...there just is no comparison. It is an easy choice, hands-down. And this last election proves that more and more voters are beginning to see the light. All of those that don't, really do deserve a refund for their education. And please don't ramble on for 4 pages about the definition of "light", like you did about what a "debate" is.
By the way, obviously, I also agree with Kile that if a lead or storm manager is petty enough to think that my political affiliation would somehow affect the quality of my work in the insurance field, I wouldn't want to work for them either.
PS- I seem to recall that JimF is leaving the industry, so what do you care if a vendor or carrier cares about your political viewpoint, hmm? Gonna have to call your buddy Daschle and come up with a new excuse. Besides, we can all tell you are a lefty. All we want to know is WHY?

Neutral because I have 60 pending... no time to participate in this type of discussion. Besides, by the time I got online to read the days rants, the topics had changed drastically from what I had read the day before. This discussion just wasn't my style. It's been interesting to say the least... and some what validating that the world is pretty much as I suspected it was.

Todd , it's my keyboard that messes up my spelling, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. One thing, did I ever endorse or support a party? If I did then you misread me. Do I like Tom D. Not hardly. At one time to be aliberal ment to be fiscally responsibe and to care about your fellow man. But the Rushimaniacs have taken the word and marginalized it. I guess if you come from a conservative leaning you could read the discussion that way, but, sigh, but getting a clear answer out of our conservative friens is more difficult then stuffing a wild cat in a shoe box. It wasn't a liberal who suggest a benefit to having children still working in mines.

OK, I'm going to let you guys in on a little secret. I've been smiling the whole time I've been typing. While I stil hold firm to my conservative/libertarian beliefs I do tend to resort to hyperbole for effect.

Clayton, I was speaking tongue in cheek when I said I believe my opinions to be superior. I enjoy and often learn from the opinions of others.

Mark, I was only making a point with the kid in the coal mine example. That point being that even though the late 19th and early 20th century may have seen a lot of labor abuse, the current welfare system is simply another form of opression, this time, impossed by the government instead of by capitalists. I guess one could have argued the oposite side by saying at least the freelance pharmaceutical distributor kid on the street corner was learning market forces and the cut throat (litteraly) world of economic competition. One day he could trade in that street corner for a comodity brokers cubicle and make just as much money leagally.

Jim, you have been fun to argue with, I hope I get some work in the Carolinas, that is where you are, isn't it? If so the beer is on me and we can further debate the right vs. the left. I truly enjoy it.

Now, can we talk some other issue? Possible Gulf War II? The drug war? Taxes? Anything else?

Kile, Thanks for the change in tone, and yes, I am in Greensboro, NC (halfway between Raleigh and Charlotte) in the middle of the I-85 corridor. I'll take you up on that beer when you get here, and heck, we'll leave politics alone and we can debate who has the best barbecue: NC or Texas. (I'll concede that Louisiana has the better shrimp and oysters).

Just to update Alan J. and others interested in the weather here in NC, Duke Power is now reporting power outage to 1.2 million homes (as a matter of comparison 600,000 homes were without power during Hurricane Floyd) and much of the power is not expected to be restored until the weekend. I was out and about today, and saw lots of tree limbs over fences but more on top of cars. Damage appears to be much heavier as you move south from here, especially in the Charlotte area. Temperatures are in the low 20's.

I was placed on standby late this afternoon by one of the larger national vendors, and being that this is my stomping ground, I'll also be checking and monitoring the local and regional IA firms. If I hear anything worth mentioning I'll post it here.

Good luck to everyone looking for work, and drive safe if you're out anywhere in this mess. There are lots of accidents.

Kile I hope that should we meet a beer would be in order, and a lighter subject, although I hope you found this as enjoyable as I did. Jim, I would have a hard time choosing between NC and Texas bar-b-que it wuld be like comparing apples and oranges, and they are both great. Maybe somewhere there is a reasturant that serves borh. Even though I am knee deep in mold I hope this is a chance for people to get back to work.

OK, here is an even more contentious argument. Even though I live in Lousiana, my parents live north of Dallas, in Gordonville to be exact. I love it there and hope to live in that part of the great state some day myself, but to be honest, I prefer pork for my BBQ and that would have to send me to NC. Sorry mom and dad.

Speaking of food,BBQ and such, I like a good Brunswick Stew with my pork. Something that sounds kind of gross is catfish stew. It is found around Orangeburg, SC. It's prepared almost the same way as brunswick stew except the fish, any kind, is put in a few minutes before its done in big chunks. It has been a couple of years since I did a hog, use to do about four or five a year for our get togethers. My smoker is in Texas so it may be a while before I get to use it. I thought I had this place sold, but as usual it fell through. Now I have got another buyer and still trying to get out there before Spring.
Are you guys about to wrap things up in Laffayette? I haven't heard a good damage report from the ice storm yet, I'll bet there will be a lot of roof damage from tree limbs.
Only a few more days and I will take my test for SF, finished up the Insurance Law 1&2 and Inland Marine Last week, should get the results back in a few days. I need a Spring Break this winter, all of this study is fun but sure puts all the honey-do's on the back burner. I still hope to attend the Vale course this spring. My wifemate doesn't nag like she is supposed to, she just cheers me on. Maybe after fifty three years she just gave up.
Weather report: here at the base of Hog Mountain, the temp is 28 degrees, calm and clear. The forecast is more of the same. Ya'll be safe out there.

Newt, that fish stew you mention is also called a 'fish bog' up here, and generally includes oysters, crab, taters, onions, corn on the cob, shrimp, and big chunks of fish thrown in at the last minute. About anything else you can think of both vegetable or fruits de mer can be thrown in, depending on location (they tend to throw in more seasoning down around Charleston).

Since we are talking about food and politics under the same thread, I'll share a story from a 1974 election in down east North Carolina that I recall. At the time I was working as the driver and personal aide for the NC Attorney General, who was running for the US Senate which was being vacated by our beloved Senator Sam Ervin (remember him as the head of the Watergate Committee?).

The AG and I attended a fish bog - political rally one Friday night down in Hereford County (which was being sponsored by the local Sheriff who was known by everyone by his nickname, Little Big Man) and the fish bog was attended by folks from four or five surrounding counties.

While the Atttorney General was the featured speaker of the evening, all the local democratic candidates were also allowed to get up and speak for a couple of minutes. (There weren't many Republicans around in those days, especially in eastern N.C.)

Well, this rather old feller finally got up to speak, and said to everyone "you all know me, I am the Sheriff of Jones County and I need you folks to elect me ONE MORE TIME."

He then went on to explain what many in the audience already knew. He had been stopped about a year or so earlier by a state highway patrolman for driving while under the influence, and as this was his 3th or 4th offense, he had lost his drivers privileges (license).

He told the audience his democratic opponent was making this an issue in the upcoming election. The old sheriff went on to say that he and Miss Mary Rose (his better half) really were needing and counting on his retirement money to live out their life with purpose and happiness, and he really needed one more term in office to get it. He reminded folks of his long service as sheriff of the county and all he had done in service as such.

It seems his opponent was also running around telling folks that if there is or was a crime or murder or robbery in the county, that the sheriff could not legally drive to the crime scene.

The old besotted incumbent (who was faster on his feet than a Louisiana cat adjuster) told this crowd: "now that's a damned lie, and you folks are wise enough to know it. My chief deputy Moyer lives just down the road and he comes and picks me up in the middle of the night if there is an emergency call, and if Moyer wasn't available, ya'll all know Miss Mary Rose would get out of bed and drive the Sheriff's car and me to the scene."

Most of the locals grinned, knowing that driver's license or no driver's license, the old sheriff drove wherever and whenever he wanted, knowing the local democratic judge would never put him in jail (his 'own' jail, to which he had the key by the way), no high falooting highway patrolman from 'other parts' notwithstanding).

When he finished, the crowd applauded his candor and honesty, and when the election was held, the locals voted to return him to office.

This was some of the best of southern politics of another day and time. A day when the news media didn't investigate every little thing and report each and every political shenanigan.

BTW, my candidate, Attorney General Robert Morgan (a conservative democrat) was elected to the US Senate, where he filled the Ervin seat, and served as the NC Junior Senator (our Senior Senator was then/is now, Jesse Helms, until Liddy Dole is sworn in as his replacement).

Can anyone tell me one thing that the Republicans, ie George W. have done for the common working man. All I ask is for one.

P.S. We are the common working man.

Has any politician ever done anything for the working man that wasn't selfserving. It is kinda like getting a good deal from a car dealer.

Its not the working people that gets help, it is the non productive ones that don't mind the long lines and red tape, just as long as no work is involved. Our war on poverty is making more poverty.

This is all done for the vote, even some working people are falling for it, paying more taxes. Bush got the tax cut through, and it was even across the board. Thats the way it should be, propaganda that say its unfair is comming from politicians that take big bucks from industry (for favors), they are being blackmailed into giving.

The Rev. Jeste has be milking the big co-ops for his personal treasure trove in the name of civil rights for years. He is stirring the pot of insurection, in history we have hung people for less. Of course they didn't get the voters out, thats the difference.

We grafted a lemon onto a tangerine tree and the lemons took over.

Well, let me see, do you want to know what Republicans did for the working man or do you want to know what George W. Bush did. The Republicans freed the slaves, the hardest working men and women in the country at that time. It was Republicans that created the robust economy of the 90's that enriched all working people in this country.

George W. cut income taxes at a time when our country was trying to work it's way out of the recession he inherited and it worked, we are no longer in recession. He appointed Don Rumsfeld, the most competent Sec. Def. we have ever had and restored the confidence of our men and women in uniform in the quality of their leadership. He led us through some of the scariest days most Americans alive today can remember and did it with grace and dignity, something that was sorely missing from the oval office. And there is certainly more to come.

Too bad most of you can not be done here in bayou land to witness the dirtiest political cat fight I believe this country has ever seen. I am so sick of campaign adds that I can't wait for Sunday morning when it will all be over. The sad part is neither candidate is attractive as a Senator. On Saturday I will be voting AGAINST the incumbent and not FOR the challenger. I think it's sad that these are the two choices we have.

How about some votes on the BBQ issue. I'm still campaigning for the pork side, no offense to the beef people.

Newt, if you get the chance, read the book Shakedown by Kenneth Timmerman. It's about Jesse Jackson and how he operates, it's a real eye opener. I had no clue how he made a living until I read that book.
