Be on the look out for emails promising military satellite images you can use as screensavers. It's a trick to unleash a new worm.
Virus writers are taking advantage of the attack on Iraq by releasing an email supposedly offering a variety of war-themed attachments. However, the emails actually contain a new worm called Ganda-A.
Internet security experts believe it started in Sweden by someone unhappy with that country's school system. Subject lines include "spy pics", "G.W. Bush animation", and "Go USA!!!!"
The worm emails itself to addresses in the infected machine's "Outlook" email address book. It also scans the machine looking for security applications and shuts them down.
Experts says this won't be last virus or worm launched in emails related to the war. Here's how you can protect yourself:
Treat any email about Iraq war with suspicion. Only open emails when you can vouch for the source. Update your virus software at least once a month. So far this worm hasn't had much impact but it has woken us up to the potential dangers of war-related emails.
