Jury awards $11.3M over defamatory Internet posts

Posted 10/10/2006 10:07 PM ET

A Florida woman has been awarded $11.3 million in a defamation lawsuit against a Louisiana woman who posted messages on the Internet accusing her of being a "crook," a "con artist" and a "fraud."

Legal analysts say the Sept. 19 award by a jury in Broward County, Fla. — first reported Friday by the Daily Business Review — represents the largest such judgment over postings on an Internet blog or message board. Whats Happening to the World, CITGO Doing Business in the USA, Owned by The Venezuelan Government, Free Speech Out the Window, Nuclear Bombs and Atom Bomb Testing, Kids getting Shot at school. Makes a person Want to move to the woods? Whats Up with the World Today?

What Can WE DO to Make the World a better Place for all?

We can make a conscious effort to perform at least one random act of kindness every day and pray that that causes a chain reaction in others.

The world has not changed Roy. The internet arrived giving some lunatics the ability to show their IQ levels. The only reason anyone is negative is if that person allows it. Negativity does not and will not rule my life. I am more concerned about our young people moreso than adults. We are not teaching them respect, integrity, and common sense. How do we work on that? More parental participation in the teaching of their children. Accepting responsibility for ones own action seems to be very difficult for some people.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

California court: websites not liable for libel in third-party postings
Nov 20, 2006 6:15 PM US/Eastern

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Websites that publish inflammatory information written by other parties cannot be sued for libel, the California Supreme Court ruled Monday.

Unless the U.S. Congress revises the existing law, people who claim they were defamed in an Internet posting can only seek damages from the original source of the statement, the court ruled.

I though I had posted this before I left the office but had received an error under a new thread called Legal issues. It seems now when I am logged in I see the post under Legal Issues but when I am not logged in I
