How is everyone handling the adjuster's fee schedule in regard to mileage & fees, particularly in light of ever increasing expenses with stagnant wages?

Gas here (on Long Island) is about $3.40/gallon. Adjusting Companies are still charging 45-50 cents/mile, which was the rate when I 1st started in 1991. They are also still agreeing to give 50-100 miles for free. Is anyone turning down work because Mickie D's or the Big W pays more? :)

Has anyone noticed that the hourly rate for a demo person is higher than we get to pocket as an adjuster? What are your feelings & how do you plan on handling it? Personally, I feel our profession just can't be beaten down any more than it already has been. Thought/Feelings/Plans?

Makes you think the carriers do not feel working property claims is that complex. They seen to feel the measurments and photos can be learned in three days. Seems the real problem is thousands of people will do what they request for what ever they will pay.

The problem did not start with all the new people in adjusting. It was because adjusters who have been doing this work for 20,30, 40 years will do the work for what the 3 day people will work for.

I do it five days a week and I am very grateful for the opportunity.

You might check with your vendors, My mileage charges have increased since 2005. They were .45 and now range from .65 to 1.00 depending on vendor. One vendor still pays .45 but adds a "fuel surcharge" that goes 100% to the IA.

I have turned down several claims in the last few months. I live and work in a very rural area where claims do not stack together well. I will not work for free. It makes no sense financially or practically to use your own equipment and not be compensated. There are so many ways to make money in this world, if the carriers are not not willing to pay for a good file, the good adjusters will adjust and find other ways to make a good living. If you work in this field and put all of your eggs in one basket, you will eventually be dissappointed.

It's just my opinion!
