The OKC rattler did damage in the area and was felt in North Arkansas.

I think most folks do not understand the difference between a 5.0 temblor in California as opposed to a 5.0 temblor in Virginia. But there is a massive difference due to the different building codes.

Anyway what are thoughts on the following:

Should there be significant damage, do you think the carriers would have to dip into the adjusters with the California Earthquake Authority certification pool since I don't know of any other state sans California that has a EA protocol or would you think they will simply utilize experienced adjusters regardless of CAR cert.

To work earthquake claims in California the CEA is mandatory, but what about other states. I have often wondered why the powers that be seem to think earthquakes are but a problem exclusive to the West coast.

I do have my CA earthquake cert and worked the quake in VA. An earthquake certified adjuster was specifically requested in several claims that I was aware of. The carriers did not seem to care if the cert was from CA just that I was certified.

As to differences between damage in CA and other states; I found that the damage in DC and MD was much worse than it would have been iin CA. This was not only due to the difference in the building codes but also due to ground conditions. I was actually very surprised to see the amount of damage, however it was cosmetic where I was.

My guess is that the strongest earthquake, historically, in North America, was the 1811 rattler centered on the New Madrid fault in Missouri.

The Mississippi river ran backwards, it created the Land between the Lakes in Tennessee and rang church bells in Boston. There were thousands of recorded after shocks.

    Robby:

There a few of us left who worked the 94 quake. Maybe we need to start a seperate EQ school. Building codes outside CA are totaly different and it doesn't take a "big one" to cause damage. I'm afraid there aren't that many people who have EQ coverage to justify a call out if we have an event outside CA.

When the Miss River ran backwards it created Reelfoot Lake in the very NW corner of TN.... TVA created LBL with the KY Lake and Barkley Lake dams. I think the creation of Reelfoot Lake killed out all or most of the tribe of the Reelfoot Indians.

My thoughts, regarding EQ coverage, roughly parallel yours, Alan.

Actually, I doubt that working EQ in CA would be worth while. Insurers learned an expensive lesson, as a result EQ coverage is different now than in "94".
