Guess I just don't get it. I've been using a Stanley FatMax laser tape that I got on Ebay for $85. For the average roof thumper (me) it does 98% of what that $679 Disto D8 does. And $594 stays in my pocket.

The fat max is an ultrasonic measuring device with a laser pointer, not a true laser measurer. I have found it to be inaccurate on many situations and recommend a true laser tool.

I have to make a correction on the previous post about a Stanley Fat Max not being a lazer.

I have 2 of them purchased in New Orleans in 2005 for $70 each. They were on sale, down from $99 so I went back and bought the second one 2 days after I bought the first one. They are excellent for inside measuring. I even carry the 35ft tape and have shown the policyholder the accuracy of them as well as doublechecking myself at times. Always been accurate.

My Fat Maxes are made by LEICA, in Austria, and are true lazer measuring devices. They may have changed since then but the ones I have are Lazer made by Leica.

I also have the Leica D6 for outside measuring up to 600 ft. to big to use inside all the time.

I was recently researching and comparing and made a decision on the Milwaukee. It has 200' capability, 10 measurement memory, water resistant, shock resistant, walking measurement capability and a 5 yr warranty. None of the others with comparable features, would provide more that a 3 yr warranty. The cost, overnighted was less than $190. I have not yet put it to the test of Catastrophe claims adjusting. But I will this week!
