    Hello,

I'm considering becoming a part time auto adjuster in Pittsburgh PA. After searching the archives for information I still have some questions that maybe the wise and experienced on this forum can answer. I have a background in the automotive field; I was a certified mechanical master auto technician and service manager in a couple dealerships over a period of 15 years. So I'm very familiar with parts and flat rate time estimating.

Is there training/testing/licensing that is required in PA that I must accomplish first? Or, should I seek out and insurance provider, or independent adjuster firm to be hired as an apprentice? Does anyone know what doors I could start knocking on in the Pittsburgh area?

What should I expect to get paid throughout the phases of inexperience to experienced and how does an auto adjuster get paid? Per claim? Hourly? Salary?

What equipment will I need? I'm assuming a laptop and portable printer but are there any other expenses to start? Software? WiFi?

I did say I would like to do this part time, and I usually have between 4-8 hours free during the day (afternoons/early evenings) and a fairly flexible schedule if I know in advance. Is this feasible in the timeframe I have available?

Look up ADA and PDA on the internet it stands for Auto Damage Appraisors & Property Damage Appraisers, both are franchise independents and probably have offices in Pittsburg, then the phone books. A company called American advertized on this site this week. I think its a flat fee per auto, plus some expense.

Tim, You can expect to be paid a paupers wage for part time auto adjusting. Auto claims typically pay very little unless you can get assignments directly from a carrier. Typically you will net $40-60 per claim, and supplements are on you. Some have better contracts but not many. Also typically you will work as a damage appraiser, not an adjuster. In many states, no license required, but I would still pursue a license. I would try local body shops for training, you will learn more seeing the repair process than any company will teach you. The software is much more expensive than property, $175-225. A few vendors provide it but not many. SCA will put add you as a user for $75 a month, and pay you $45 a claim. No guarantees of how many claims you get. Be careful of anyone that does promise you all the claims you can handle. I quit a job on a promise of 15-20 claims a week, only to get 4 in two months.

If you would like to PM me with specific questions, feel free. I'll be happy to help any way I can.

Ever auto adjuster I have ever met on a cat that worked for a large vendor wanted to get into Homeowner losses. It seems this is a good way to get into cat adjusting.

    Thanks for your replies,

I'm not having a whole lot of luck over the phone trying to reach anyone in my area that may be able to give me a direction in which to pursue this. If anyone has any phone numbers or contacts in the Pittsburgh area or general phone numbers for carriers in which I can reach the people responsible for doing the auto adjusting in my area it would be greatly appreciated.

As far as homeowner and property loss adjusting… That may be something I would like to pursue in the future, but automotive is my area of expertise and I felt it would be easier to learn and jump in quickly.

    Thank you in advance,

    Tim

I worked along side several Pilot adjusters in Miss & Fla. I was with Eberls. I assume we were all payed alike. The numbers I heard were all in the same ballpark. We were paid on a daily rate, then 65-70%, depending on the contract.
