I've been in the insurance business for about 6 years now, spending the 4 most recent of those as a property adjuster.  I started off as a staffer and moved over to being an independent.  I'm clearly not at a point in my career where I work year round, but I do alright for myself.  Plus, my wife is a staffer with USAA's Internal CAT Unit, and she does well too, and luckily her job gives us all the stuff we need like medical insurance, etc.  All-in-all, we're in a pretty good spot.

Now that being said, I've never done any kind of auto adjusting or body work, etc.  I know little to nothing about the physical damage aspect of it, however, I've gotten the opportunity to attend a two week technical training program for free hosted by an IA firm.  I'm going to go, if for no other reason that I'd enjoy learning about vehicle repair and such.  So this gets to my question.

For those of you who have been auto PD adjusters as well as property adjusters, would you say that you get more work on the auto or the property side?  I know that auto cat assignments are not lengthy (i've been told an average hail storm deployment would only last two weeks or so) but I'd assume there are lots of them.

I really like the idea of working in a drive-up tent in the shade writing up easy hail estimates, than clumbing up on hot roofs in the million degree sun.  I clearly get it there is more money to be made working fee bill property claims than on daily rate, but as I said in the beginning, I'm in a pretty good spot now so it's not like I'm looking to make a mint.

Thanks in advance for your respected opinions :-)

The long and short of auto adjusting is, cat assignments last half as long and you earn half as much daily as property. The money is OK, but not great. And you will have to have some other options most years for your off times. The good side is there are several internet based vendors you can sign on with that will you send assignments.
