I haven't got one of these claims yet but I have heard they are getting more common.  I know a public adjuster who tried to represent a building owner who was the victim of a tenant who damaged the building with an explosion from marijuana oil manufacturing. Her claim was denied due to a policy provision that excluded loss due to illegal activities, whether or not the landlord was aware of the activity.

Leland, almost all states allow medical marijuana use. I only bring it up because my wife uses medical marijuana and she cannot smoke it, she does cook it and make candy/cookies, creates oil, and butter stuff like that. IF that tenant has a MM card, well just sayin'

I have only seen a single news article about the single explosion. While I guess that a single event could be considered an "increase", this really does not strike me as something that most of us will ever see. We are a lot more likely to see fires as a result of improper electrical wiring of their grow rooms or as the result of putting several street lamps (read: miniature suns) in a small enclosed area.

I could see a lot of insurance issues on any of them though, since federal law still says that marijuana is illegal, regardless of state laws. There was recently an article about banks refusing to work with the new legal industry in various states, as they have legitimate fear of being held legally liable for money laundering or other illegal action by the federal government. I suspect that many carriers adopt similar attitudes toward the marijuana industry, but I could see where a few carriers would rush to fill the gap.

I have handled a few claims from Meth labs and quite a few claims due to damage from marijuana growing, I'll probably see one of these explosions sooner or later. I do daily claims.

    AA,

actually there are hundreds of cases like this. However, I never saw a single report or news article and only found this out when I Scroogled Marijuana Oil explosions.

Wow there are a lot. I was thinking, "oh crap!!" I don't want my home exploding. Yet the oil and butter my wife makes is wholly different than what the news is reporting. Apparently these folks were trying to extract all the THC and make Hash or hashish oil. That is BIG TIME illegal and I say akin to people cooking and making meth

What my wife takes has virtually no THC (what makes pot heads get high) and has high concentration of  cannabidiol (CBD). This stuff works great for kids who have cancer and although the jury is still out on the next comment, it appears that this strain of medical marijuana is being used (in some pediatric cancer cases) in  place of chemo and radiation and is seeing great success. There are even a few cases claiming this minimal THC high CBD strain has put certain cases of pediatric cancer into remission. I can only hope as my wife has cervical cancer

All I know is this, my mother-in-law was in tremendous pain and was always ill from the side effects of painkillers as she suffered through ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). This strain of marijuana allowed her to eat and live what little life she had left before ALS eventually took away her ability to walk, her ability to eat, to swallow, to speak, and finally her ability to breath. ALS slowly paralyzes the nervous system. What is especially awful is ALS does NOTHING to diminish a person's mental capacity nor awareness. The mind is clear and acutely aware of what is happening. She was one hell of a lady though and brave! Most ALS patients prefer to be intubated when they lose the ability to breath. However, even being intubated it usually will only extend life a year or two. She didn't want to live through that terror and when that time came she chose to suffocate and she was gone
