Gentlemen, my name is Isaac and have a few questions for you guys:

Where and how did you all get your start? I used to be in roofing sales and liked the work but I'm not a salesman therefore I didn't excel in that field. If a guy didn't want a new roof no matter how badly it was damaged then he didn't want a new roof and that was that. I got to know several adjusters pretty well but that was about five years ago and I've since lost contact with them.

I'm 31 years old and have been involved in carpentry, construction, hvac, etc my entire life, I currently work at Home Depot, and I'm really interested in getting into claims adjusting. I've checked out two adjusting courses, ValeTrainingSolutions and AdjusterPro. A buddy of mine who is in commercial and multi-family roofing suggested AdjusterPro because of the Xactimate 28 certification. Anyway, I'm not looking into getting right into independent or CAT work right away because I obviously have zero experience. From what I've read in here, some of you guys suggest getting started as a staff adjuster first, adjusting daily claims, in order to get a firm fundamental grasp and understanding of the process? I'm not opposed to that at all. I'm not looking to make a quick buck or get rich quick, rather have a decent career doing meaningful work that actually helps better other people's quality of life. Working at Home Depot for the rest of my life isn't something I personally aspire to do.

Sorry for my long windedness but I wanted to clearly state my reasons behind my strong interest in claims adjusting.I have the money saved to pay for either the AdjusterPro or Vale courses, I just want to make sure my money is well spent on the best possible training. Also, what is the possibility of actually landing a staff adjusting job with no experience? I have an AA degree in Music Education and an expired Small Business Management Certificate but no formal education beyond that. It seems as though all of the large firms, i.e State Farm, Liberty Mutual, require a Bachelor Degree.

Again, I apologize for the long post but I want to be armed with as much info as possible before I take the leap in a new direction. Thank you gentlemen in advance for your time, answers, and advice.

    Isaac,

I'd recommend you get connected to people personally. This forum is brutal to new people. I'd suggest you get on LinkedIn and connect to Jason Heenan of Royal Adjusting, Jeremy Rettig, and myself (Chris Stanley). If you haven't gotten the answers to your questions I'd start there. We all have a passion for helping new adjusters take the right steps.

This is a great site full of resources and people have probably answered exactly the questions you are asking, but it sounds to me like you just want to talk to a REAL LIVE PERSON. I don't blame you, feel free to email me and we can set up a phone call. Chris@IAPath.com

Anyone else who reads this feel free to take all of the same advice, user the forum to read the answers (don't just ask the same questions), reach out to individuals who want to help, like the ones listed above or others I'm unaware of and get working. It's hard to get started so get all the help you can.
