I had a fellow IA ask me the other day what lines of work are similar to adjusting as he is thinking about how to get out of this business.  I scratched my head and really didn't have an answer for him other than anything with customer service and analytical skills.  Now that I've had time to sit on it, I am driving myself nutty wondering what would I do if I wasn't doing this.  What would any of you suggest to someone wanting to leave this profession?

Hmm Beating your head against the wall. Maybe being an abuse monkey for management. Swimming in paper (computer) work.
Cat adjusters are the lowest form of life in the insurance industry. When they need us they really need us then they can tell us to get lost, sometimes for months.
I can not think of a more challenging interesting job, that always hits you with something new. (try getting clear directions in Puerto Rico).
Sorry, can not think of anything else, must be why I am still an adjuster after more then 45 years.

Adjusting is extremely specialized.  Its basically irrelevant to any other line of work.  There's not really any getting out of it after you've been in it for a few years and people associate it with identity - everyone goes "You're an insurance adjuster?" chuckles, and rejects your application regardless of any other factor.
