    From Tyler Stanfield's WunderBlog

    "Overview of the 2014 Season
With the increasing odds of an El Nino event developing by the peak of the 2014 hurricane season, unfavorable conditions will likely plague the storms of the Atlantic basin from start to finish. This will cause a limited amount of hurricanes and major hurricanes to develop during the season and decrease the likelihood of a hurricane landfall. Along with the anticipation of a quieter, below average season, the overall lack of above average surface temperatures in the deep tropics, increased trade winds, and low instability will likely be a large factor in less storms being capable of intensifying and becoming hurricanes and major hurricanes.
That said, you should not keep your guard down. An inactive hurricane season can just as easily have a major hurricane make landfall as much as any other season, and this forecast should not be taken as a reason to write off the season. It only takes one to make a quiet season, a bad season."

A few choice quotes from the same guy last year:

    "Atmospheric Conditions
The upcoming season is pretty ripe when it comes to the conditions storms will have to face this year. Unlike the past seasons, atmospheric conditions are primed and look to be headed for a close-to-perfect setup. Dry air and the Lack of Instability in the Tropics has subsided, and Wind Shear will begin to decrease as the Sub-Tropical Jet lifts away. Trade winds also look like they will be less of a problem compared to previous seasons."

"This means that there will be no El Nino to cripple the Atlantic season from being a bustling active season like the 3 previous seasons.

    Outlook for Storms = Great"

    "The Rundown
Basically, the season is poised to be an active and dangerous season with many long tracking deep tropical systems forming in the MDR. With increased height anomalies along with cooler SST's in the subtropics to create a more divergent/higher pressure aloft, many of these system that form will become landfalling storms. This said, a sharply increased risk of Major Hurricane Landfalls along the Gulf and Southeast coasts of the US are expected. "

"There is little doubt that this season may break our drought of having a Major Hurricane hit the US coastline, but even if there isn't one. Make sure you're prepared. Make a plan, be ready. This season might just be a doozy."

As I always say, these guys have a hard time telling me if it is going to rain a few days from now (sometimes even the next day). I don't put a lot of stock in some random guy who blew the last few calls telling me what is going to happen in 6 months.

Very well known Meterologist did a confernece and stated that if/when the Hurricanes pop up this year they will be in our back yard. He was saying they will not be traveling off the African coast across the Atlantic, but will be born in the Gulf, Atlantic, or Carribbean right on our borders with only a 2-3 day notice.

This will be interesting and one to follow. He was correct about the freeze patterns that the US had.
Give them what they want, when they want it, and how they want it !

Sorry Accelerated but as I stated this was at a large conference. It lasted about 1 1/2 hours and was quite interesting. I believe that history, including weather patterns are cyclical and when the speaker confirmed this going back to charts from the 50's, I was even more attentive. No "links" for reading, sorry. But he did say what I stated earlier about some Hurricanes forming on our door steps instead of traveling all the way from Africa's weather patterns. It will be interesting to follow.

I am sure I was at the same Seminar that Pondman was at and I agree with his statement.

The 2 or 3 day off the coast remark was made and should indicate for all to be ready on a short notice.

I know we all hear about Global Warming/Climate Change but this presentation did not mention it once, he just gave his facts and charts dating back to the first records kept. He also stated he did not look at this as a job he just enjoyed the work and studies itself.

My point being, I don't believe in Climate Change as it is being told to us and this guy just backed it up. I was telling a lady in the hall about the weather when I was a kid and it being the same as this last winter in Ohio and then go in and the presentation has charts to show the same thing on the weather back in the late 50"s.

Hmmm this is an el nino season. Fewer storms and more recurves is the norm. Also the changing weather patterns seem to be pushing storms further north
(it is a very slow process). I will not be betting the farm on a big season and have other arrrangments made. Still it only takes one Andrew to make your year.
Still its Huricane season, and I will be spending more time on the weather sites and watching the models.

Don't give up the day job this year. The Atlantic is hostile to hurricanes. We will see some storms as usual but unless we get an Andrew (1992) could be a long season.

We have lift off or land fall, looks like a shift in direction will leave the outer banks on the strong side of a cat 2.

Reports so far this AM indicate that there was not much damage from Arthur, Anyone in the area care to provide a "on the scene" update?
