An oil spill at Port Denarau in Nadi on Saturday was contained a few hours after it was detected.

This was confirmed by Port Denarau Marina Limited general manager Cynthia Rasch yesterday.

It is believed the oil spill was from a leak in the diesel pipeline at the port that supplies fuel to vessels that berth there.

Ms Rasch said the fuel spillage was detected on Saturday night and was not major.

“We received assistance from Pacific Energy who supplies the fuel.

“The area was sealed off with floaters and absorbent material used to take in the fuel that leaked out.”

“At present I am waiting for a report from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) and Pacific Energy to make a proper report on the spillage.

“The leakage was also repaired at the pipeline and that was done within a few hours after it was detected.

“Everything has been contained.

No comments could be obtained from Pacific Energy. Meanwhile some workers said the smell of diesel was very significant and could still be seen on the water surface yesterday.

Ms Rasch said no damage was done to anything as the containment of the spillage was carried out quickly.
