MT. AIRY, Md. (WBFF) - Multiple businesses were seen damaged in Mt. Airy as severe storms came through Friday evening.

The Town of Mount Airy said on Facebook that "it appears a tornado did touch down in Mount Airy."

Red Cross also released a statement saying, "A tornado touched down in the Mount Airy area of our Western Maryland chapter. Three homes were destroyed. Disaster Recovery casework is being provided by those displaced by the tornado."

There was no immediate corroboration from National Weather Service.


Photos and video showed major roof damage at a T.J. Maxx at Twin Arch Shopping Center, off of Twin Arch Road at Route 27. Reports also said the Weis supermarket was damaged.

Siding and facades were seen ripped off a gas station and a High's convenience store.


About 1,600 BGE customers in that area were without power shortly before 10 p.m.


The Fire Department said that so far they have responded to three major incidents. They said that they responded a roof collapse at TJ Maxx in Twin Arch.

Three people suffered minor injuries, but they refused transport. They also confirmed that they have responded to trees down and power outages.

Officials also said that wires were down and that a propane tank was hit by a tree but the situation has been placed under control by residents.

Trees fell down on top of three trailers at the Pheasant Ridge Mobile Home Park. Those residents are being assisted.
