Because I use the Disto and think that it is the best by a country mile, I have an older model that I loan out. Linda Asberry has it at the moment, Jim Davidson is next in line, but if you would like to try a Disto without buying one email me and I will put your name on the list. My intent is to keep loaning the Disto out until somebody fails to return it or some one breaks it and refuses to pay for repairs.

I doubt that it will be broken as I put it on top of the Jeep and then drove off and bounced it off the pavement. John Cameron Swazy and his Timex have nothing on Jack Wolfe and his Disto.

During the LA earthquake I was introduced to, and ordered a Dimension Master Plus. It is a triple beam sonar with aiming light and calculator. At the time it was about $150.00. I have had it overhauled once when I broke the aiming light. (Repair cost = $50.00). It must be aimed at a perpendicular surface. Sometimes the sonar can be distracted by waves in the air from things like heat, steam, or even, (please don't laugh, you heartless oafs), ghosts.

It is great for interior use and limited exterior applications up to about 50'. I do realize it is obsolete with regard to a true laser, but then it still amazes the Insureds and gets the job done. My last phone number for them was 1-800-854-8075, at Calculated Industries.

It seems that many of you are sold on the Disto measuring device. I have not used any type of laser device and would like some feedback on some that are less expensive than the Disto. What type do you own, have you used it long, and what do you think about it.

Thanks

The lasers work great, but when you HAVE to have a tape the FAT MAX is best. It reaches 11'-0" w/o bending. Comes up to 30'-0" long.

I use the Leica Disto everyday of my working life. The freight is a little high, but as noted below the increase in productivity and getting a tax break makes it a little better

I am in negotiation with Leica USA to have a demonstration of the Disto products at the CADO Convention in March. They may offer the products at a reduced rate if enough interest is generated.I love the Disto Classic and would recommend it to any Adjuster.I hope to see all of you at the Convention!!! Have a great day.

I bought the Leica Disto Classic for $595 from a survey store here in Ventura CA. It is PRICELESS. Within a few days I had to measure an entire 3600 SF house, room by room by room by room. I had someone else writing down the room names and measurements. We finished measuring and making notes of repairs per room (water loss that turned into a mostly gutted asbestos house) within an hour. Measuring alone would've taken more time than that with a tape measure.

The Disto is a must for sewer back-up and floods. Don't have the tape measure dragging across sewer effluents nor black water. When you consider the health factor and the doctor bills the Disto will pay for itself quickly. We thank C. Deaton for leading us to this wonderful gadget.

If anyone is looking for a last minute Christmas present for an adjuster, or just for themselves, here is a real deal. Leica is having a year end special on the Leica Disto Basic laser measuring device (which is being discontinued) at a sale price of $395.00 plus shipping. It has almost all of the same features as the more expensive models.

Their other models start at $595.00 and go as high as $1,695.00.

Check out their website at http://www2.leica-geosystems.com or you can reach them by telephone at 1-800-645-9190.

Merry Christmas to all.

I use a Sonic Measurer from Radio Shack. Cost is $29.95 plus battery. Works great up to 60 feet and is accurate to +- 1" and will save in memory your measurements. Cheap, works great, saves the tape from water-soaked basements etc...

My older model does not have a provision for the sight.

I like the older model the best because it charges off my truck. I just keep it on the charger most of the time. I very seldom try to use it for outside measurements as I am slightly color blind and I can't find the red dot at a distance in sun light.

Chuck:
Since you own both can you tell me the difference in the old and new model besides the size? Can you use the sighting attachment on the old model? I have not seen this old model to tell if it has a metal plate on it. Thanks for your two bits worth!!!!!

Just my two bits worth, I have the older model and have had it for several years and I have the newer model. Of the two, I like the older model better. If you don't want to buy the older model email me and let me know where it is and I will buy it. I like the rechargeable battery as it can be charged off my truck.

Yes the older Disto can use the sighting attachment if it had a metal plate on the right side , toward the front.
Yes, the sighting attachment is a positive asset.
Yes, you can measure a roof from the ground, with a little practice on the classic, not sure about the older model. (BUT, you can't see hail from the ground)

IMHO the difference in the size and measuring capabilities of the Classic are worth the difference.

Can a Disto (Old Model: Not a Classic) use the sighting attachment? Can you really measure a roof from the ground? Is the sighting attachment needed? I found a used Disto(1998)with a charger for about $350. Is a new model worth the extra $245? Thanks for any help!!!!!

A few years back, Stanley were selling a magnetic belt clip for carrying your tape measure. They stopped making them and for the past couple of years I've searched for a similar item. The magnetic clip with belt holster is available again at Home Depots under the trade name of Husky. It's not made by Stanley anymore. They run about $7.00 if anyone's interested.

Sears sells the Disto. I have had on for years and there is nothing better for inside measurement.

These units are not cheap, but amortized over 5 years the price ain't bad.

Jeff Carter has one named "Baby"

The Disto Meter, (originally purchased by Chuck Deaton from Moses) is normally available from a surveyor supply outlet. Check your local Yellow Pages or do a search on the web.

Mine were purchased in Fairfax, VA Telephone # 703-273-4477, ask for John or Sepp. Mention CADO
There is another port in this mass of hundreds of pages that gives the address also.

I only know of three of us that use it at the present, Wayne, Chuck and Myself. BUT, once you have it , its like your GPS or CAR.

Where would I find a Lecia Disto Classic Laser tape. I have had 3 Sonin 60 Pro which 2 of the three I really liked and had good luck with and they were about $60.00 when I replaced it with
the new version of the same unit I really am not happy because the humidity causes you to have to recalibrate it all day long depending on the
degree of humidity and weather conditions.
Thanks for your help.

here's an unusual item for an adjuster: a logger's tape- the kind used by saw hands in the log woods. for those of you who aren't familiar- it's about the size of a 35' stanley, but it's actually 50', 75' or 100'- with spring tensioning/re-wind speed that you can actually adjust. can't stick it out, but can do a lot of other things, including the old tennis-ball trick. can't hook it over/on the edge of the roof but what you can do is fasten a horseshoe nail to the end of the tape, bend it into an "L" shape, & then stick it where you want it. the tape will crease if you bend it too tight. it's not indestructible, but it is tough enough for a lumberjack. mine's lasted about 6 years now. the things run about $37.50.

For steel tapes the Stanley 35' 1" wide is very good, if you can find them.
Also the purchase from anyplace that will replace them, NO ? asked is great.

For interior or exterior work, there is only one (1) top of the line item. The Lecia Disto Classic Laser measuring device. You will not have to replace this , ever. Unless you loose it or someone takes a fancy to it.

The cost is $595.00 and there are optional accessories available.

Lufkin or Stanley seems to last a long time. If you are measuring interior rooms, get a laser Stanley intellemeasure with laser beam spotter. Its good for 50'. It runs about $60.00, but is well worth it in time saved and durability. If you use a metal tape, try not to bend it any more than necessary. I have a stanly 30' I have been using for 6 years with no problems. Take care of you equipment and it will take care of you. I have a Stanley metal 100' tape that I have been using 12 years. Looks terrible but works great.
