"Support for Windows 98 and Windows 98 S.E. had been scheduled to expire Friday, and for Windows Millennium Edition on December 31. Under Monday's decision, the software giant would maintain paid phone support for the operating systems and review security threats to determine whether it will provide customers with security patches through June 30, 2006."

Perhaps we should ask Bill Gates how to form a co-op of adjusters that would allow us all to make decent livings. He certainly knows how to.

You're still using 98? Get into the 21st century, XP is the way to go.

Actually Windows 2000 is the way to go, economically. I don't want to buy a new copy of Office.

Gotta agree with Chuck on this one. Have 98SE on 3 machines, win 2k on 3 machines and XP pro on 2.

Have to say, despite the nuances of 2k it outweighs the costs of XP by far, and will maintain until Mr. $$$ bags stops support.

Okay Dave, I gotta ask.

3+3+2, does that equal 8 active / useful / available computers?

If so, what don't I understand about the need for that volume?

I can understand 3, with the NB/LT/DT combinations; and just maybe a 4th because I still have it around and it is useable. But 8??

CCarr, my friend Dave, who by the way now has a brand new ceramic hip, is a confirmed, certificate carrying, gadgeteer. At least two of the 8 are pen tablets.

Because of the heavy business use of Win2000 I think it will be some time before Bill decides to pull the plug.

CC,

Yes, all are up and running, and several are on my network. As "time goes by", my personal need to be in the forefront of technology sometimes overrides common sense to some.

The two on Win 98se are a Dell 800 (3 yrs old) and a Quantex 400 4Years old. Then the one running win 2K is a 1.7 Homebuilt, 1 year old and a 2.8 GHz, 1000 Megs ram, 80 Gig HD, homebuilt (2004) running XP pro all networked for various and sundry projects.

Then the Laptops enter the picture, (6 total) from a Toshiba 500, a 780, an 8000, all running Win98 SE and a 8200, running win 2K (all Tecra's) to my newest barn burner, a 2.4 GHz with (2) 80 gig HD's and 1000 meg's ram. Then the two pen tablets, a Pro Blue, running Win 2K and a Viewsonic, running XP pro.

So that equals 12, plus 2 field units, (a HP PC and a 2.4 Ghz Laptop, running XP pro and the home computer, running XP Home & Server, running Windows 200 Server that makes 16

I just don’t like throwing things away when there may be a use for them one day.

OK im old fashioned, and take 3-5 units with me on the road depending on the project, but that is my comfort level, and don’t forget, it all stared in 1980 with an original PC, and there are several more in the garage,

Maybe I should nave a garage sale? But you can’t get anything for them anymore.

Maybe one does not need 3 Digital cameras either, or Internet capability from the vechile, or several measuring devices, BUT...............

To me, these are all the tools of the trade, and anything that makes my work, easier, faster, or more efficient is the way I choose to go. "Damn the cost, full speed ahead"

Do I detect some “Bill Bashing” by some Socialist oriented Cat adjusters in some of the threads lately? Why would you regret paying a few bucks to the guy that is saving you many bucks each year?

Boy it is cold up here in PA. Here in Valley Forge someone said it is Zero tonight and will be glad to be back to KY tomorrow night. See some of you in Galveston next week. Jason will teach the PowerClaim class Wed AM. I hope to get warm once again.

I would never regret paying a few bucks to a guy that saves me many bucks each year.

I do not believe that Billy Boy Gates is that guy.

For years MS stated that the price of there software was 40% higher than it needed to be because they lost so much revenue because everyone lets their friends install the software package they just bought. Then MS implemented activation, thereby eliminating the ability to install your software package on your friends computer. Did we see a reduction in price? No. In fact the new versions of Office and Windows cost more than the old versions.

MS is pushing everyone to a two year upgrade cycle. In my opinion, it is a very rare software application that loses its usefulness after two years. I do custom programming for the local newspaper's security department. The engine of those applications is Access97. This is the same Access97 that Microsoft quit supporting years ago, but is still quite viable as a problem solving tool. If Bill Gates had his way, the Virginian-Pilot would have already gone thru Office2000, Office XP and Office2003 for their 800 users in the Brambleton office. At a cost of over a million dollars. Do you think that their security apps would be running a million dollars better?

MS drives the upgrade cycle to maintain their revenues. The upgrade cycle would be much longer than two years otherwise.

I just sold Windows 2003 Server, Exchange Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000 for 40 clients to a client here in Va Beach. I send MS over twelve thousand dollars, and they send me 11 CD's. And I had to sell the MS software at my cost, to make the deal palatable to my client. Thank God I get my labor time to install and configure the packages. And his application has yet to be developed. The $12,000 just bought the software foundation for development of his app.

And much like my good friend Dave Hood, I too have many computers, most of which have a specific purpose. There are three servers (file server, email server, database server) and three desktop client at my office. I have one server and five desktop clients in my home office/multi-track recording studio. I have four laptops, and three handhelds. And I am a one man company, although that may change in the near future.

In the office in addition to the servers, I have a application development computer, an Internet computer and a testing machine.

IN the studio, in addition to the server, one machine serves as the multi-track recording machine, two serve as machines to master music from DAT tape to CDR, and two are dedicated CD burning machines.

One of the laptops is my portable development machine, a second serves as a backup development/GPS machine. One pentium laptop I have DeLorme 7.0 installed on and use it when GPS is needed in bad neighborhoods or to avoid traffic into sporting events/concerts. This computer could be stolen without me being upset. The last one, a Sony Vaio with a ten hour battery, I use to record concerts for those bands that allow recording.

None of these non-server machines are cutting edge as hardware power outstripped software requirements back at the Pentium 2 stage. The most powerful is the developement laptop which is P4 2.4, 40 Gig, 512 RAM, with a DVD/CD burner. My development computer is a P4 1.7 and all the rest are pentium 3 or older.

I prefer my machines to be setup to preform a specific task. That way I can optimize the machine for that task.

Having said that, if needed, all these machines can be deployed in one large business network for twelve users. Just what would be needed to run a large storm operation. Conveniently, I also have the software to allow this as well.

All I need now is a huge storm, the desire to dive back into the fray, and a break from the huge amounts of computer work I have at present.

Hope all is well

The only computer I have that runs any of the Win9X operating system is the old Pentium Laptop, running Win98SE.

The 9X kernel is inherently unstable. The NT kernel (Nt4.0, Win2K and XP) is the way to go.

That would be 2 XP's, 9 Win2k's and one Win98SE.

And every one of my operating systems and applications is legally licensed from Microsoft. I wonder how many other could say that. I do not like it when people pirate my software, so I do not pirate others.

Be Well
