Even though I am not a Dem or a Republican I thought it was only fair to give a balance to the view expressed in the previous e-mail... This article linked to below is just one of many that came up in a google search of the above Dashcle quote. Personally, I think Daschle saying that was just sour grapes because he lost his power seat.

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/001/935zlpdn.asp

I know this isn't the right forum for this topic, so I will also post this e-mail in a new thread on "Almost Anything" if anyone cares to continue discussing politics.

If we do end up having a discussion on politics I recommend everyone take the World's Smallest Political Quiz to see just how you line up in the big scheme of things!

To be clear - I am a Libertarian, ableit a moderate one.

I kept looking into the Daschel quote and think that has become sort of an "urband legend." CNN, whome I consider slightly more reliable than the average newspaper, quotes him this way:

""What happens when Rush Limbaugh attacks those of us in public life is that people aren't satisfied just to listen," said Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. "They want to act because they get emotionally invested. And so, you know, the threats to those of us in public life go up dramatically, on our families and on us."

Source: http://www.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/11/26/ip.pol.opinion.Limbaugh/

So, maybe he didn't say it just the way it has been portrayed in the media. However, I still feel the comments were motivated by being a bad loser.

I love a good political debate. It takes my mind off the numerous important things I have to worry about. The exact quote from Daschle that caused all the commotion was:

"Rush Limbaugh and all of the Rush Limbaugh wannabes have a very shrill edge. And that's entertainment. We were told that even people who don't agree with them listen because they're entertaining," Daschle said.

"But what happens when Rush Limbaugh attacks those of us in public life is that people aren't satisfied just to listen. They want to act because they get emotionally invested. And so, you know, the threats to those of us in public life go up dramatically, on our families and on us, in a way that's very disconcerting,"

Basically what Tommy boy was saying is "obviously people who oppose my liberal agenda are addle minded neaderthals who need to take their marching orders from Rush Limbaugh." Strangely enough a week later, former Vice-President Algore was quoted in the New Yorker magazine saying:

"The media is kind of weird these days on politics, and there are some major institutional voices that are, truthfully speaking, part and parcel of the Republican Party. Fox News Network, The Washington Times, Rush Limbaugh — there's a bunch of them, and some of them are financed by wealthy ultra-conservative billionaires who make political deals with Republican administrations and the rest of the media. Most of the media [has] been slow to recognize the pervasive impact of this fifth column in their ranks. That is, day after day, injecting the daily Republican talking points into the definition of what's objective, and pretty soon, they'll start baiting the mainstream media for allegedly ignoring the story they've pushed into the zeitgeist. And then pretty soon the mainstream media goes out and disingenuously takes a so-called objective sampling, and lo and behold, these RNC talking points are woven into the fabric of the zeitgeist."

Immagine that, suddenly Algore is claiming that the media is biased against Democrats. Obviously he forgot about ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune and NPR. What world is this man living in? It smacks of the "Vast right-wing conspiracy" that Hillary Rodham Clinton Rodham tried to blaim the whole Monica Lewinsky thing on, that is until her Husband's seed was found staining the infamous blue dress, now how did the Republicans manage that one?

Now I must say, in the interest of fairness, I am a registered republican and a Rush Limbaugh listener, as I'm sure one or two other CADO regulars are. Even though I am by philosphy more of a libertarian like Jennifer is, the only hope of keeping Democrats out of office and preserving at least some sort of sanity in our government is to vote Republican. OK, I've had my time on the soap box, NEXT!

Can I take a turn again?! The bias in the media is overwhelmingly skewed to the left. I think it would be hard to find anyone who disagrees with that. Anyone want to try??? I too like a challenge (though it won't be hard to prove you wrong).

Kyle, I agree with your last statement about voting Republican to keep the Dems out. However, that is a decision I make based on my social agenda. I have increasingly found that the differences between the donkeys and the elephants is becoming smaller & smaller. That was how I found the Libertarians. The less the government has to do with my day to day life, the better off we all are.

I don't listen to Rush (not much opportunity) but I do enjoy NPR. I may not always agree with their editorial slant, but I have learned more about stories in the news and cultures around the world then the traditional news outlets provide. NPR keeps me company when I have 2 hours to drive to the next claim!

I was 99% sure that your post was tongue in cheek, Justin. I'm just glad you confirmed it :-).

As far as NPR goes, Jennifer, I too enjoy it. All things considered is one of my favorites. And you are right, the two parties while coming from different directions do seem to be headed to the same place. 50 years ago you couldn't find anyone in my family, not to mention my state that would vote anything but Democrat. As the old saying goes, here in the south you could run a yellow dog as long as he was listed as a Democrat and he would win. I believe it was the opposition to the Vietnam war and the way the military was treated in the 60's capped off with the Carter preidency in the 70's that turned the south from a Democrat stronghold into the fastest growing area of the Republican party. We here in the South have always held the military in high esteem (no offense to you Yankees). It probably also helped that it was around the 60's that most of the people who remembered reconstruction first hand finally kicked the bucket.

I know there are some people out there who lean to the left, let's hear from you.

Oh, by the way, I don't know how many of you keep up with the minutia of politics but there is still a senate race that is undecided. Down here in Louisiana we do things a little differently. We have what is called an open primary system. Instead of Democrats voting in the democrat primary and Republicans voting in the Republican primary in Sept. or Oct. and having the general election on election day with the rest of the country, we lump everyone into the same primary, Republicans and Democrats together and everyone, no matter what party affiliation votes on the same ballot. The top two candidates, even if there is a field of 50 and the top two get 4% each, advance to the run-off.

Now it seems that it would be easy enough to just have the primary in October and the run-off in November, right? Well a while back somebody read the constitution and realized that you can't elect your senator until election day. The Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The way we did it down here is, if a candidate got 50% + 1 vote in the primary that candidate was automaticaly the winner and there was no run-off. Threfore, the election was decided before election day and that is unconstitutional.

Well, this leads us to the interesting part. Mary Landriew, the Democratic encumbant and the daughter of a former Mayor of New Orleans is running against Suzanne Terrel, the republican commisioner of elections for the state. Since the Republican margin in the senate is wafer thin and they don't want any more replays of the Jim Jeffords affair a couple of years ago, it is very important for the Republicans to win this race. As you can guess, the mud is flying. It is a knock down drag out cat fight up to the runoff on Dec. 7th. The TV ads are non stop and the accusations are everywhere. Landrieu voted against the tax cut 20 times, Terrell took campaign contributions from a voting machine company when she ran for commisioner of elections and then awareded that company the state voting machine contract. And it gets worse from there. On the nightly news last night there were only 2 commercials for anything but the two candidates, both for a toyota dealership. I wish you guys could be here, because if you are a political junky like me, this is heaven.

Cann't resistent must comment. The greatest achievemnt of the right is to convince the public that the media is totaly left wing, this makes any balanced reporting attackable. The trouble with Rush is that as he panders to the fears and hatereds of his worshipers, in the most extreme (and he is the closest thing to a national voice for those who live for hate have) he encourages the view that as (ie Tom D is in league with satan, and yes he did say that I heard it) only the right is right and any action to defeat the left or middle is reasonable and justified. While the earnest (and wealthy) Mr L would never tell someone violence is justified, his attacks encourage those who can make that metal leap of faith. This makes him more dangerous then all the so called left wing media combined. During the Bush election the pure anti democrate hate that was posted everywhere on the inter net including here is a sample of what I mean. But it is justfied because it supports the GOD of the right, making money at any coast.

Well, first of all, the main stream media is heavily slanted to the left. That is why Fox is beating the snot out of CNN in the ratings war. The general public is tired of having liberals cram their agenda down our throats. Rush does not pander to fears and hatred. If you believe so please be specific. I do not live for hate and I don't believe the other 20 million people that listen to Rush Limbaugh do either. If you want to hear hate, listen to James Carville, Hillary Clinton, Paul Begala, those people know how to get their point across using fear and intimidation. They don't take on the Republicans on any issues or on a point by point basis. They sling mud and attack people personally, but they do not even try to have a debate on any kind of intellectual level. If you disagree with them you are labled as a racist or a homophobe or the enemy of the environment or you are part of the "vast right wing conspiracy".

From my own experience Republicans are informed and knowledgeable about current events and issues and those who vote democrat are woefully ignorant about the facts and base their opinions on emotions rather than reason. If you read Ann Coulter's book "Slander" she points out that even though most large publishing houses refuse to print books by conservatives those conservative books always top the best seller list because conservatives read, but books by liberals harldy ever make it out of the first printing, because liberals don't read. Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have millions of listeners, because conservatives listen to talk radio. Liberal talk shows by Alan Colmes and Andrew Cuomo went down in flames because liberals don't listen to talk radio. In short, conservatives thirst for information on the issues and liberals would rather listen to Britney Spears and Madonna.

As far as Tom Daschle, I think Rush is right when he refers to him tongue in cheek as El Diablo. I really believe that Tom Daschle is the worst thing that has happened to Washington since Bill and Hill. He is the most obstructionist Majority leader the Senate has ever had. The confirmation of the presidents judicial nominees used to be a formality, if the nominee doesn't have any criminal convictions and has never been accused of raping gerbils then he or she was confirmed. Senator Daschle refused to even vote on most of the President's nominees, in one case, he refused to let a female judge get a vote, because she upheld the law requiring parental notification before a minor child can get an abortion. SHE UPHELD THE LAW! Imagine that, a judge doing her job. The ultra liberal trial lawyers association, (another group that is destroying our country) approved this judge, but Tom Daschle would not. Democrats would rather have activist judges who make law from the bench instead of judges who do what the founding fathers intended them to do which is impose the laws that the legislature writes.

If you have a problem with people making money, you probably live in the wrong country. This is the foremost capitalist society in the world. As a society our goal is to make money. If you don't have money you can't live. Sorry, that's life in the big city. There's nothing wrong with it and it has served our country well for over 225 years. I for one, enjoy making money and it really ticks me off that the government takes 40% of what I make and redistributes it to people who don't work because they were too lazy or stupid to finish high school.

Above you wrote: "he encourages the view that as (ie Tom D is in league with satan, and yes he did say that I heard it) only the right is right and any action to defeat the left or middle is reasonable and justified"

Yes I believe that the right is right and the left is wrong, that is why I am on the right. Why would I identify myself with the political thinking of the right if I thought it was wrong? And if I thought the left was right, wouldn't I be on their team instead? I think you overstep however when you say that ANY action to defeat the left or middle is reasonable. First of all the right believes in the constitution as it was written, not as liberal activist judges have interpreted it. Everyone has their own right to live, think, eat and breathe the way he or she wishes to live. to paraphrase an old saying, My 1st ammendment rights end at the tip of your nose.

If you haven't figured it out yet, people who align themselves with the right side of the political spectrum simply want to be left alone. It is the left that tries to push it's big nose into everyone's business. They want to tell us how to live, how to think, what kind of car to drive, what kind of food we can eat, what we can do with the land that we own. Basically from our perspective what the left wants is Socialism and everywhere socialism has been tried it has been an abismal failure. It takes away initiative and reduces productivity and hurts society as a whole. That's why conservatives hate labor unions, they do the same thing, they punish the best and brightest and reward the lazy and incompetent, much like the civil service.

Wow, I've really rambled on. I'll step aside and await the next salvo.

Jennifer,
Thanks for the excellent article. It is very accurate in my opinion. This is a fine example of why the democratic ticket was relabeled "Sore-Loserman" during the last election.

Kyle... you have basically built my argument for Libertarianism. Thanks.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Hubbie and I were just talking about
unions this morning and how they keep people from moving forward. As we
move from a manufacturing economy into a technological one, the unions tell
their members, "don't worry, we'll not only protect your job, but get you
more money." Well, this doesn't work for the big picture. Manufacturers
just pack up and move to another country. That leaves less manufacturing
jobs in our country and union laborers with no skills beyond their specific
task at the factory. The unions, while appearing to be for the little man,
really are the best representation of "The Man" our country has. They are
run by liberals who are lining their pockets while screwing the worker by
not telling him what the outcome of the latest negotiation is going to be --
short term raise then no work at all when the company they work for leaves
the country.

Unions do try to help keep jobs in America.  When Pennsylvania steel companies were losing business to cheap steel from overseas, the union pushed the Democrats to pass a steel tariff, which raised the price of foreign steel and made the domestic steel competitive.  That's how unions and Democrats would protect the jobs of union factory workers.  Of course, the tariff raised the cost of everything made with steel and it was estimated that the tariff would cost the average American $230 a year.  Farm subsidies are a similar tactic, but rather than raising the price of foreign goods, they made domestic goods seem cheaper (I say seem because we still pay the cost through higher taxes).  So, protectionist strategies (e.g. tariffs and subsidies) cannot be used for everything.  We can't afford to bear the extra cost of protecting every job in America.  I! t basically becomes a tactic used to protect the politically powerful--just another political favor doled out by politicians.  Pennsylvania got their tariff because they were in the middle of a heated and close Senate race.  Farmers get subsidies because there are so many of them, in so many states.

Politics is my hobby... sorry these posts are so long, but since I have only been an adjuster 3 1/2 years I don't have as much to contribute on that side. I am contributing where I know a little more, not from experience necessarily but from observation & learning from history.

Unions are also the reason that the US auto industry can't produce a decent product, more money goes into labor than into R&D. That's why I drive a Toyota and my girlfriend drives a Honda. That's also why the big three auto makers no longer make cars in Detroit. They have moved their factories to Alabama, Tennesee, Kentucky, Louisiana. States in the south believe that a person has the right to a job without having to pay a bribe to a union to get it.

Following taken from an article by Hal Lindsey as posted on WorldNet Daily:

Radio talk-show king Rush Limbaugh accused outgoing Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States by attacking President Bush and criticizing U.S. efforts in the war on terror.

"He's attacked my president," said Limbaugh of Daschle in an interview yesterday on CNN's "Reliable Sources" with Howard Kurtz.

"He attacked our effort in the war on terrorism. He said he's seen no evidence of any victory because we haven't gotten [Osama] bin Laden."

Limbaugh added: "He's out there broadcasting this to the world. This is getting such coverage who knows what kind of aid and comfort it might be providing the people that we're attempting to bring to justice here, either legally or militarily."

Limbaugh was referring to comments Daschle made at a Nov. 13 news conference, when he questioned whether the Bush administration "can legitimately say we are winning the war" against terrorists.

A week later, Daschle attacked talk radio, saying "Rush Limbaugh and all of the Rush Limbaugh wannabes have a very shrill edge." He charged that threats on Democratic officials and their families "go up dramatically when Rush Limbaugh attacks" them.

Earlier on his own show, Limbaugh had said of Daschle: "What more do you want to do to destroy this country than you've already tried? Do you want your nickname to be Hanoi Tom, Tokyo Tom?"

Limbaugh said Daschle's attack on him backfired on the outgoing Senate minority leader.
