I met a young roofer at a house for a reinspection.
Since we had already been out there and denied the roof for hail damage once, I drew a test square, handed him a piece of chalk and asked him to mark the hail damage.

He then went to the ridge, and began to draw a line across the ridge, then down the rake edge. About half way down I asked, "what are you doing?" He said he was circling the hail damage, ie. the entire roof.

I then pulled out my Haag picture book and showed him who they were and why they were qualified to say what hail was... showed him the photos of hail damage, all very clear. Then, being young and confident, he said Haag had no clue what they were talking about and that I was "deluded" because I believed them.

All I could do was laugh and show the homeowner the photos and suggest she move on and leave this roofer behind.

Had one pressure wash out an attic to "wash the soot off the framing!" Guess he didn't realize the water would run down into the home. Went from a $20k attic fire and contents cleaning to over $85k on the home alone. Destroyed custom cabinets, 3-4 piece molding, and wood floors. At least he had insurance, made a good sub case...

Quite a few years ago I was dealing with a parking garage fire, dealing with the structure loss. It was an outdoor parking garage with 5 levels that suffered a loss from 12 or 15 cars burning up one after the other on the 2nd level; a very hot fire with the gas and synthetics in the vehicles.

After a month or so, it was all cleaned up, engineers had done core samples in the concrete and all seemed reasonably well; but the recommendation loomed to do weight stress testing.

The loss and costs to this point was about $75K, but the PML was closer to $1M.

I met the handling adjuster on site with the engineers and the weigh scale truck and people with a crane. The test went well on the 2nd floor and then the crane was positioning for testing the 3rd floor which was above the fire.

I was standing around kind of bored with the repetition of it all, when suddenly the engineer starts yelling into his radio that he had said only 2 ton, not 4 ton.

Well it takes time for the crane to mosey in and start removing the weight blocks, and this weird noise starts to rumble; and sure enough down comes the 3rd floor concrete slab onto the 2nd and then a piece of the 2nd onto the 1st.

Numbers start spinning in my head as we watch from the street, and then the terror if everyone is properly insured and how will I deal with this.

The engineer turns to me almost in tears, and says he is in real dog dirt, I said it sure looks that way; and he replies that damn it he had taken his wife's new car today.

I looked at him with a pretty blank stare, and he said he hadn't wanted to park it on the street with all the equipment and traffic around, so he had parked it on the 1st floor of the parking garage. We went around the corner and we could barely see his wife's new Beamer nicely squashed in the 1st floor rubble.

I was working clean-up and got a call from a contractor to reinspect a roof. It seems that the prior adjuster had paid for the shingle roof on the house but did not pay for the mod-bit roof. I went out there looked at the mod-bit and agreed that it was damaged by the hail and authorized the replacement.

The next day I come into the office and on the front page of the morning paper is a picture of the house I was at the day before, the roof engulfed in smoke and firefighters swinging axes to ventilate. The roofers had set the roof on fire with their torches.

Not exactly funny, especially for the homeowners, but kind of a good story.
