This is the lead CADO front page story. While we had heard a different vendor was taking with ISO (Insurance Services Office) so this was news when we read about it on CADO first.

http://www.iso.com/press_releases/2006/08_10_06.html ISO ACQUIRES XACTWARE

http://www.iso.com/about_iso/about09.html  tells about the property and casualty division.

A couple of years ago, while sitting around the camp fire letting the beer doing the talking, I remember discussing the up-loaded estimates on Xactimate’s Server.

The wealth of information in these  Insurance loss estimates is enormous and a valuable product.

The estimate have the “type” of claim, affected areas, date received and inspected. And most important of all , the dollar amount of the type claim.

It is going to be interesting to see what ISO does with Xactimate’s information for ISO’s customers in ISO’s “analytical information” products.

It will be really interesting to see which way the pricing goes and if they will give us back the second install without charging full price for it.

When I saw the home page story on ISO's purchase of Xactware, I wondered how long it would be until John or Gale posted.

I don't know much about marketing software, but I do know the kind of clout that ISO has in the industry. If I were Gale and/or John, I would be very, very worried. There are many smaller, regional carriers that do not script any of their own forms, they rely on ISO forms. Will these carriers come to rely on ISO for claims management software? Since most of the national carriers are already using Xactimate, it will make sense to the herd to fall in line.

Alan being very, very worried is a negative force that only aids one's competition. : )

I think I also read where Met Life went with Xactimate as well, were they with MSB before?

I hope this means that ****timate will get an insurance make-over.  I'm tired of dealing with the inferior product and all it's short comings.  It reminds me of CCC vs. Mitchell auto estimating programs.  CCC had the data side and delivered data mining to the liking of the insurers, but Mitchell ruled the industry with their manuals and ease of use.  CCC had done nothing more to acquire the industry than to market the service from the top down just as ****timate did.  Being forced to use one system over another is just another way of taking away the freedom of choice.

“The privately held company and its more than 230 employees will continue operating at its current headquarters in Orem, Utah, as a stand-alone entity, serving its extensive customer base of property insurers, contractors and service providers throughout the United States and Canada.” is from the press release.

I expect the purchase price (required ROI)) will play a roll as to how Xactimate is run five years from now. It is a totally different company that the estimating software division of MSB. I am sure Xactimate is highly profitable. If ISO gains a management role it could get interesting.

TRANSUNION AND ISO A-PLUS INTRODUCE CREDIT LOSS HISTORY SCORES FOR AUTO AND PROPERTY UNDERWRITING
CHICAGO AND JERSEY CITY, N.J., Aug. 8 Two industry leaders, ISO’s A-PLUS™ (Automobile-Property Loss Underwriting Service) unit and TransUnion, have created a comprehensive risk score that will bring greater efficiency to property and auto insurance underwriting and policy renewals. The new Credit Loss History Score (CLHS) provides one of the most powerful predictive tools for insurance carriers to better assess the risk of new applicants and renewals….

RE: TransUnion/ISO partnership..
It has been proven that credit scores can show the likelihood of claims occuring (this was shown through a study by the University of Texas School of Business, and this is a liberal school). The howing was loud and hard about the proof. However, more and more states are either banning or severly limiting the use of them.

Does this mean that ISO has an inside track to get the states to change their minds about credit based scoring?

Since ISO means different things to different people below is a starting point for me.

Perhaps the name confusion is accidental. Look at the two links from Google below. Clearly www.iso.org and www.iso.com are two different organizations it would seem but both are in the standards setting business. While www.iso.org spells out on their home page who they are, the folks at www.iso.com never share their full company name with you on their homepage so I guess if you get them confused with the International Organization for Standardization they are not upset.

Those of us that have not been around this industry for a long time may naturally think about the International Organization for Standardization when we hear or see ISO. I will try to find more supporting info about the ISO at purchased Xactimate (Xactware) recently. There are many valid questions that need to be answered before the initial implications of the merging of Xactware with ISO can start to be understood. It may be years before the full implications will be understood. The common thread I am hearing today is that Insurance Services Office Limited derives its income by taking a very small part to all the insurance premiums collected by carriers who are a members of this ISO. That needs to be supported by creditable research.
