Before you read below, I will introduce myself. I have done tech support, computer repair, etc. for Pacesetter Claims Service for the last 3 years. I have worked with a lot of adjusters who I have kept running on a storm. If you ask anyone that I have worked with, they know that I know what I am talking about. Below is a tool that I think is very important for adjusters. It deals with security over the internet (well beyond what a firewall does). If you have any questions, feel free to contant me at dborg@pacesetterclaims.com. We all know that wireless networks (especially free public-access points like coffee shops and hotels) are insecure. I have been testing a wireless security application developed by a company named CSR Technologies. Those I have worked with before know that before I recommend anything to adjusters I test the product first. I have tested this software and truly recommend it to anyone that operates in these conditions. In order to get more info and sign up, go to https://www.csrtechnologies.com/wireless/. Use the code: dborgpace in order to waive the set-up fee. The cost is $15 per month. If you have any questions, call CSR Technologies at (270) 746-0324 and ask for Richard Pickett, or feel free to contact me. There is an ever increasing threat of viruses, Trojans, hacks, and just general insecurity when dealing with the internet. With all of these comes the possibility of someone getting personal information from your computer and using it in a malicious manner. If you search online, you will see many cases of online identity theft. These usually occur from someone using an insecure network and someone else connecting to that same network, utilizing a sniffer, and getting passwords, account names, etc. Common places for this to happen are Hotels, Coffee shops, etc. From there it is just a matter of putting those items together to gain access to any and all personal information that can be obtained online (it would wurprise you what can be found). Once they track down a Social Security Number, it is just a matter of time until you buy a house in the Bahama’s and never get to vacation there. With most adjusters having to truly “live” on the road it increases this risk. Doing anything from banking online to checking emails can be a risk. Most people do not use different passwords for different things or strong passwords (letters, numbers, and symbols), so with one password many things can be hacked into..

Having previously been a firewall/vpn administrator for a large callcenter, I have two things to say. 1 - To adjusters. Get EVDO Internet from Verizon, or Satellite Internet. Wireless hotspots are fixed points of Internet access anyway. You can take EVDO or Satellite wherever you go, and it's actually pretty secure. 2 - To adjusters again. If you've completed #1, you shouldn't even think about wasting your money on the CSR software. You won't need it. To be honest, adjusters are many times more likely to fall victim to phishing scams than someone setting up a Kismet drone at a wireless hotspot, or setting up a wireless honeypot.

That is true. But what about the adjusters that have not completed your step 1? And true, adjusters are more likely to fall victim to a phishing scam. What about that small chance that comes to pass, and the adjuster falls victim? Then what, oops? Being a firewall/vpn admin does not really have a lot to do with the public networks. All that means is you understand how they work, how to configure, how your network was configured. You have no controll or even the ability to know how each and every network that an adjuster connects to is secured. So again, you are right on your two points, but as you know, this is not a cure all for everyone. Just an option and a pretty cheap one at that. I still stand behind it for those that are not in your step #1.

Dave, thanks for your research and info on a solution that 99% of CADO readers could use if they leave home with their notebooks.

No problem. I just figure that as much as we (IA Firms) require you to travel and live a life on the road, we should at least give you all the tools you may need. I am pretty partial to Pacesetter but some things need to be available to all adjusters so that is why I posted. I am glad you thought it useful.
