Let me briefly explain why I started this new thread. There will be only positive and intellectual quotes allowed on this thread. If you know of an inspiring quote or statement, please post it here for all to learn from. I started this because my best male friend is about to die of terminal cancer, at age 94. He has had 17 major inventions in his life time that I know of and not one patent applied for. When asked why, he said, money has never been my proclivity. Things have to be done for others, so why should profit be the driver. This man invented the heliarc welding torch, and at age 14, a steam pop off valve for steam tractors that were exploding with too much pressure, the first grain cart, 5 blade land leveler, designed and jigged the dynofocal mount for the DC-3 airplane, the bench mount for the P-51 A Mustang, and the radial mount for the F-4U Corsair. He designed many jigs to fabricate airframes in less time during WWII, and many others. He is the one that taught me how to wire a house, carpentry, plumbing, welding, tool machining, how to fly, build an engine, drive heavy machinery, build airplanes, read schematics and plans, and how to be a man with integrity and self esteem. He was a personal friend of Albert Einstein and a confidant of President Harry S. Truman. He never bragged about his friend/relationships, nor his abilities and inventions. His quote, "If it has to be done, and you know how to do it, do it with pride and dignity and do not ask to be thanked. Now you have served your country and mankind." He was never prejudiced and helped many blacks and the less privileged during the time you weren't supposed to do that. He bowed to no one. He was a man, one hell of a man. I will miss my Father. He is who I am and will be missed with all my heart. If you believe in the hereafter, he will be there. You might say a prayer that he will not be in pain during this horrible time.

Mr. Toll: My sincere condolences to you and your family during the difficult times that surely lay ahead. I'm so sorry to hear that. My daily prayers will include you and your family. No.1 Speech, by Vince Lombardi "Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win. Every time a football player goes to ply his trade he's got to play from the ground up — from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's O.K. You've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you've got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second. Running a football team is no different than running any other kind of organization — an army, a political party or a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win — to beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think it is. It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they are there — to compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules — but to win. And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat. I don't say these things because I believe in the "brute" nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle — victorious."

Tom: You and your family are in my prayers. ~~~~~~~~~ "Success builds character, failure reveals it" ~Dave Checkett "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." ~Winston Churchill "Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear." ~Mark Twain "Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail" ~Ralph Waldo Emerson "To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe." ~Anatole France

You cannot change your thoughts without changing your life in the process -- either for good or for bad. Immerse yourself in the right thoughts and you will become the person you long to be, just as surely as the planting of an acorn yields an oak tree and not a pine tree.

Actions speak louder than words; so my pop passed on to me. Mr. Toll. I'm sorry for the illness and passing of your dad. The heliarc welder greatly aided mankind as did much of his work on jigs. My dad was a pilot and flew the DC-3 (hence, my name) and other Douglas aircraft, his preferred airplane. The readings of you and your wife have been very beneficial to me and the extended grace offered in my short comings comforting. Seems you learned and applied alot from your dad.

I do not ask to walk smooth paths nor bear an easy load. I pray for strength and fortitude to climb the rock-strewn road. Give me such courage and I can scale the hardest peaks alone, and transform every stumbling block into a stepping-stone. Gale Brook Burket

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career. When the carpenter finished his work and the builder came to inspect the house, the contractor handed the front-door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said, "my gift to you." What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well. So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing to put up less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized, we would have done it differently. Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think of your life as the house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board or erect a wall, build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deserves to be lived graciously and with dignity. The plaque on the wall says, "Life is a do-it-yourself project, do it to the best of your ability."

Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use. Earl Nightengale
