I'm studying for the Adjusters license exam in MI. Has anyone taken this exam? I got the outline of the exam and downloaded the material (almost 100 pgs) I'm trying to find out how much of the laws I need to memorize. Please Help.

Depends, do you want to do the mimimum so you can pass or do you want to learn all you can to help you to be a better adjuster?

Study all 100pgs the test is all law. Michigan likes laws on any tests that it gives. Good luck. The lic is good for in house work but not much cat claims here. Atleast what I am aware of. Let me know.

I was thinking about the california test which is where I live. I am also planning on taking the Texas exam. I asked my vendor and he said to just take the TX exam and get CA by reciprocity, no need to take it directly. It looks like I would avoid some of the paperwork etc. that way. Any comments? I also want to get the California EA (earthquake authority). Many people have said this is a popular one to get that insurance companies are asking about. Comments? Also I went to the NFIP seminar and will apply for Flood certificate. Do I really need 4+ years adjusting experience? I hear conflicting stories on this point. Thanks everybody.

You have to have a resident license in your home state.

When I lived in California and worked as an adjuster for State Farm, and the last time I worked claims in CA in 1998, there was no adjuster's license in CA. There was only a requirement to be certified in CA Unfair Claims Practices Act. And, of course, the CEA is requiring Earthquake certification (which I have). Has this changed? Any CA adjusters out there with the straight scoop?

The licensing issue can be tricky and it is definitely smart to be sure what the best route is before spending money. My home state of Iowa does not require licensing. When I started looking into adjusting 18 months ago everyone said "Get a Texas license." One little twist was that later this year we are changing our residency to Florida. I called the FL DFS last year and explained the situation (very helpful once you get through) and was told that if I tested for a FL non-resident license it would be reciprocal with TX. If I tested for TX it would reciprocate with FL as a non-resident but when I became a resident I would have to test for a FL resident license. I tested for the FL and have been able to get non-resident licenses anywhere I wanted by just completing the application, paying the fee and sending a letter of certification from FL. When we change our residency I just have to notify FL and they will roll my non-resident into a resident. I talked to a FL resident who was about to take the TX license course and explained this to him and he saved the cost of the TX course. I have heard people say they get resident licenses in TX or FL just by using an address in those states but I think that is a very bad idea. If someone were to get caught at that it would not look good on your future applications to vendors that you had a problem with a state licensing agency. I would just call the department of insurance in the states involved and let them advise you of the best way to do it. Good luck! Kim

Kim, Your situation reminds me of another twist that will relate to your situation. As a Louisiana resident, I was not required to have a license. I proceeded to obtain a TX license, then FL and so on. Once I got to Georgia, they required me to take their exam because I lived in a state that does not have licensing requirements. I contested this indicating that I had a TX and a FL nonresident license which were reciprocal. The catch was that the primary license must be a Resident License for it to grant reciprocity. Yet, if you receive the FL Resident License, then you should not have to deal with the problem of securing a GA license.
