I just clicked on the "newest" (as of this writing) member profile of Shawn Hillis.

He logged on to let the community know of his father's recent passing (4/24/03).

Mike Hillis had worked for me in the past, and needless to say, I was compelled to transfer that info into this forum.

I never had the chance to meet him ( I was directing traffic from the east coast, Mike, handling claims from the west....

He always was attentive to the task at hand, and was ever the true professional. I am sorry for your family's loss, Shawn.

This is Mike's oldest daughter D'ette or you can call me Dee.   I am writting to beg for this communities help.  Mike's wife has gone through so many tragedy's since his death and has virtually lost everything but the house.  Well, on 2/22/06 the house that they shared caught fire and is badly damaged.  We just found out that her homeowners policy cancelled her without notifying her.  We are desperate to find guidance, contractors that aren't going to rob her even more blind and people to advise us in the laws and ways to deal with permit handling and the city requirements.  I was helping my dad when he was in the field from my home as I am disabled and unable to leave my home very often and have obviously gotten out of the loop of the proper laws and regulations.  We are being told that we must even pull permits to replace drywall and are being given 180 days to do so which doesn't seem right.  Obviously, without insurance, a job, and any assets, we have no idea how we are even going to buy cleaning supplies let alone pull permits, and buy drywall.  We are being what I feel is taken advantage of and I don't know what to do.  Please somebody help us.  You can call me at (661) 723-0353 or my cell phone (661) 810-6044.  I am looking for any help that I can get.  Any help is wanted and appreciated.  Mike had so many friends and spoke so highly of so many people that I know someone out there will remember him and remember the help that he gave to you and find it in your hearts to help us his wife the one who has lost everything now.  She has nothing and I don't know how to help her.  I feel so desperate and like I am failing my dad.  Please someone help!!!!!!!!!!!!  If anyone knows Mike, they know how bad it would be for me to fail him with regards to taking care of my mom now that he is gone.

DEE as I have Posted on another section of this Forum;

Your Father sounds Like someone of Whom I would Like to have Known, & your moms situation seems impossible at the moment, If this will help, I can offer money and a kind word.

Dee, There are things in Life that no one will ever understand, one of them is purpose that God has, and reasons why, that will never be answered. However there is Purpose and reason in everything, and as hard as it is to beleive, it is for the overall plan that God has set for us all.

These reasons and purposes, I do not know, and All I do know is that I have had the opportunity to help, and am taking this opportunity as an opportunity, As well as I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT, and I assure you it is ALL GOOD, and Filled with Everything that is good....... LOVE! For one another, and for each other. Please advise me where we can send or email a donation to Help, and for sure, our Prayers, and wishes are on the way and will be there before this reply is sent!

Possibly could you set up an PAYPAL account so those who desire hto help can Email Donations into an attached bank Account?

God Bless

Ms. Dee,

I know that many CADO members will want to help your Mom.
" There, but for the grace of God, go I or some one we love".
Help us help her.

What city are you in? Perhaps many  friends are close by.
An adjuster may be able to review the policy cancellation, to see if it transpired properly. Many have contractor contacts around the globe.

We hope no one was hurt in the fire. We know that many items that evoke wonderful memories can be damaged. People are harder to fix than things. ( special things...are still special, even when charred.) They just have another memory attached. I hope that memory will be" wow" what an out pouring of love, and care from people we hardly knew, ( god's people), in our time of need.

Let us know more, the Calvary is ready to go, but it doesn't know where to go.

Our prayers are with you, and your family.
Have patience and faith and he will lift you up, on eagles wings.

Roy, Big Bob, and others,
I so appreciate your anticipated help in this matter.  You asked for more information so here goes.  We are in Lancaster California which is about 60 miles north of Los Angeles.  I am having trouble with the information I am getting from the insurance company regarding their denial of the policy.  I can't find anywhere a notice that the policy was going to be cancelled.  In fact, the payment due was for only one month not for multiple which would be more believeable to me if she were behind in payments.  We have presented a claim to the insurance company and are for the 3rd week still in a waiting game.  I have had to provide bank statements that don't show anything but, have done so because we were asked.  We have been waiting all this time and the longer it goes the worse it is for my mom.  Yesturday we got a preliminary "no coverage" from the underwritting department  but are asked to still wait because thier are special circumstances only we don't know what they are.  It is like there is something that the insurance company is aware of that they did wrong and is just trying to make sure that they can cover their behinds completely before they deny the claim completely.  We have gotten information from the agent and the lender that  they were not notified that policy was cancelled.  I am not sure what that means but, I guess that is what is taking so long.  The file adjuster brought a contractor out with her to look at the loss when she came to do a first inspect and so I know the damages are between $180,000.000 - $220,000.00 but I have yet to see any estimate.  That contractor is exactly what I am afraid of because when a second file adjuster came out who handles big losses, she found that the contractor didn't even know how to properly measure and diagram the rooms.

Everytime we go into the house it puts my mom into a deeper depression.   After the news yesturday, she just started crying and 4 hours later she was still crying and just couldn't stop.  She doesn't know why she keeps getting punished.  Mike and her had been married for 36 years when he died and had been together since they were 15 years old.  The only time that they were apart was when he was on a Catastrophy.  They had just bought the truck and 5th wheel so she could go with him because my baby sister was graduating from high school.  Now, she is so alone and misses him so much.  This fire is even worse as she admitted to me that she has managed to get through his death is by thinking that he is simply on a very long Catastrophy and that he would be home later.  Well, the fire destroyed his office.  All of his awards, certifications, licenses, class completions, seminar completions, course completions, etc, are gone now.  All of his manuels, equipment, everything that he had for working cats is gone.  She has to face that he isn't coming back now which makes this even more devistating.  You can see on the walls where all of the photo frames were on the walls for the various awards he got for the different seminars and stuff were that have melted into the walls now and have to be removed with the remaining sheetrock.  The only thing that we can do right now is just board up that room because there is no money to do any of the repairs and the city has agreed to let us do that but, they are demanding that she do so much other work that I don't know how to fund.

Big Bob, you said that many CADO member members will want to help when they get more information well, I hope I have given that.  Now, I  need more information from adjusters.  What loop hole could they be worried about?   If there is anyone near here or even not near here who would want to look over what little I have, please let me know.  I am desperate.  I can't stand seeing my mother's health deteriorating like it is so quickly.  She just cries all the time.  I have to help her somehow.  I just have to.  I know someone out there can do that.  I have read the posts that have been put here to her and they did help when I read them to her but then she got the dollar amout of damages and that was all it took to knock her into massive depression.

I am sorry if this is wordy and hard to follow.  I am trying to sort through so many feelings myself and still trying to find someway to get her help.

Some of you have asked if I could set up an paypal account and I have checked into that and I could but they charge me a fee for each one.  I think that the best way to send a donation to help my mom is to send it to :
Sue Hillis
c/o D'ette Hillis Goodner
1251 W. Ave L-12
Lancaster, Ca 93534

You said that they Calvary is ready to go but needed to know where to go well, I hope that they know where to go now.  If now, please don't hesitate to email me personally.  My email address matched my dad's it is IADJSTM2@aol.com.  His email address was Iadjstm@aol.c when he was here and got a kick out of me always following him around saying me too daddy me too.

Please to anyone who can help, please let me know what to do.  I really need to know what to do and where to turn.  I feel like this site is my one and only hope.

Dee, My Advise would be to Hire an Public Adjuster in California, to help wade through the Paperwork , and policy, Determine Coverages, and find out why if any reason Policy cancelation Exsist.  Secondly, I will email the Owner of this Site as there is a Fund that was setup, that Many of Us here have Donated to, it was setup to Help Out Folks Like your Mother.

Thirdly, Yes PAYPAL will charge a VERY MINIMAL FEE, but the Money is Transfered IMMEDITELY to the account specified. And the Fees are Very Minimal.

God Bless Speak to you soon! Thanks

D'ette, before hiring a public adjuster, do you have time to wait through the weekend to see if there is an Independent Adjuster that might be led to help you review your circumstances and report back to CADO for specific help or maybe even specific connections that might help break through whatever barriers you are encountering with your carrier?

Your circumstances and your plea have touched my heart and I'm sure will touch the heart of many silent forum members, let alone the core CADO "family."

Please re-consider Paypal.  The people that will use them recognize and accept that a percentage or fee will not go directly to the cause.  Many do not mind paying for the convenience and your Mom will appreciate the speed of the transactions.

God bless you and your family and your faith and may He fill you and your Mom (and Jamie)  with courage and stamina until you guys can get to  Peace and Comfort.

Marty

D'ette, thank you for responding.  Roy may be right, that a PA or lawyer maybe be needed right away. Marty's idea of waiting a little could save a lot of money. The apparent denial of claim coverage by the carrier,  sending a re-inspector, and a continued dialog regarding the claim certainly indicates Grey area's exist. " Pa's live in the Grey areas."

Your policy is a contract: A deal, A meeting of the minds, An agreement to be adhered to by both parties. CA law will describe the cancellation procedures required by carriers.

Does your Mom have a mortgage? Is the insurance premium paid from an escrow account by the mortgage company?
Do they have a copy of any cancellation notice?

Home owners insurance premiums are paid typically year to year. Not on a monthly basis. Lot's of  questions arise. I have been party to claims that were not claims , because escrow departments at the mortgage companies did not make payment at the prescribed time.

Hang in there, and look to the horizon for the dust cloud of the calvary. Let us know the answers to the above questions. Be strong for your mom.

Richard Lechner (SoCalRich) & I conferenced called Dee last night.

The Hillis family needs our continued prayers. Life insurance was not in place nor was proper preparation for tax liabilities when Mike passed. The HO carrier has sent a preliminary denial of claim (fire 2/22/06) based on non payment of premium. It appears that a premium check was sent, but not accepted. It appears that Notification, of Cancellation had not been received by HO, lender, and dates on agents records do not agree. The family is trying to have patience while the carrier makes their decision.

( Plan A)
Let us pray that enough Grey area exists to prompt the carrier to accept this claim.

(Plan B)
Dee is building their (Fire File) in case the carrier needs help finding any Grey area's.
