As I sit in my home office in Orlando listening to the roar of the winds of Frances, I received an email (I still have power) with the attached new NFIP schedule. In part, due to the efforts of myself and several of the other flood loss related vendor-owners we were able to first suggest and then gain increases in the old fee schedule and bring the new flood schedule more in line with other cat loss (wind/hail) schedules.

The new rates went into affect 9/1/04. The revised schedule will be posted on the FEMA website (if it isn't already).

I just heard a crash in the front yard - better go check it out!

Is there any chance of NFIP lifting flood certifications or issuing quick certifications for Frances? I cannot see how there would be enough flood certified adjusters to handle the losses. Have they ever done this?

That crash I heard was my second story bedroom window getting blown out. I didn't board up so it took two hours to seal off the opening and wet-vac the carpets. Any one know a good drywaller and painter. Also have 2 ceiling light fitures which now think they are waterfalls. All in all we are lucky here at the house. I have my dad here (76) and he is very worried about his mobile home only a few miles away. No entry to the park until at least tomorrow and they have told us there is significant damage to some units there.

They tell us on the news we have 6 more hours of squalls (Oh, Boy!). My deductible is over 8K so it looks like I will be eating the repairs.

I have not heard of the NFIP ever conducting post event certifications but there will be significant damage on the shoreline from Daytona to Ft. Pierce. Maybe they will reconsider. I will speak with NFIP Tuesday and find out.

That's all for now - back to damage control....

Keep the bucket brigade working John. Please do not be one of the "heroes" and venture out to see what can be done to mitigate. Tomorrow will surely suffice.

Interesting comment about flood schedule changes which are long past due.

Know of 30-50 all classification flood adjusters that will not even consider flood now, at the current schedules.

Most carriers are talking about raising current schedules 100% or more, after Frances leaves.

With "IVAN" on the horizon all bets are off as to schedules, percentages, etc.

The only way the NFIP will be able to clear this mess is to have a schedule that is comparable to the carrier and IA schedules and cut back on the closing/review requirements of the sub contract file reviews. Why do the NFIP reviewers have to kick back stuff on CWOPS?

The system has inherent problems presently, as we all know, but to not adjust to a Cat 4 condition plus a double header and the threat of a triple seems to be the epitome of arrogance.

Some things need to change and fast. Heard all but 5 of the Special Hurricane Task Force walked out as of last week, and they will need 500 examiners to cure the impending mess after the "Charley/Francis/Ivan" fiasco.

Hope all are safe and are able to continue it this massive project of helping those we are dedicated to assist.

God Speed to all.

Thanks for the response, John. I applied last year...took 3 months to get a letter, then only had 5 days to take the class, reapply, before the deadlne. So I gave it up. I am going to open the chat room for awhile to see if anyone wants to discuss the storm.

The fee schedule is the one that was to be implemented on 01-01-05.
Changes are in the beginning, all over 50k stays the same.

Oh well, there will be hundreds of thousands of wind claims at a substancially increased fee schedule and percentage increases.

SO who needs it?

I just got back from a drive around parts of Orlando as well as Polk County, including driving through 4 large mobile home parks. I did not see a single mobile home damaged although I did see a handful (5-6) metal canopies blown down. These were areas where there was little or minimal damage from Hurricane Charley. 1 out of 5 homes appeared to have minimum charge roof shingles blown off and about 1 in 10 appeared to have shingle damage requiring full roof replacement. Most of the highway political signs were still standing and there was no visible damage to commercial structures on main commercial boulevards. I did not see any areas of flooding.

Unless I am missing something, from the perspective of the areas I visited, this appears to be more of a media hyped storm than anything else.

Jim:
I would not be surprised to hear that wind is minimal. We had stronger winds in Charley. The only reason my home was damaged was due to the direction of winds (north). I would, expect, however, a large number of re-claims as well as a large number of new claims simply due to the width and breath of Frances. She is too big not to affect a large number of homes and businesses.

The coast is being battered. I expect a large number of flood and single adjuster claims. Many may be CWOPS but we just don't know. The bridges are closed and folks won't be allowed on until monday or tuesday.

The local news must be exhausted about talking about Charley. Now all they talk about is IVAN - 2500 miles from Orlando. What are the odds...? Three blows to O-town inside of 30 days! I may have to go out and buy a LOTTO ticket (if I can find an open 7-11)!!

Good luck to all of you that come to my Orlando. Stop by SIMSOL for a hot cup of coffee (or a cold Coke) during your stay here (even if you use "one of the other guys")!

From a brother in truth and honor...

John,Thanks for your heads up and sharing of your wisdom and experience. It will be interesting to see how Frances plays out over the much larger areas.

We're glad to be working in Orlando and look forward to stopping by SIMSOL before this assignment ends.

What about a beer blast one afternoon for SIMSOL users? Heck, we'll even bring our own beer!

Jim F.---I in 10 homes requiring roof replacement? Or 1 in 10 losses? This is all of Orlando area? If 1 in 10 losses....how many losses? Your drive was after the front end? How about the back end? Thanks.
