Anyone: I am preparing a 90 minute presentation on Standing Seam roofing for a large group of adjusters in Texas and would appreciate any information, photos, diagrams anyone could send me for incorporation into the presentation. I have a fair amount of materials now but more is always better. My topics include inspection of damages, types of damage, methods of application and repair, etc. If anyone has info on this type of roofing, please send it to my email at johnp@simsol.com or they can fax it to me at 407-384-9216. If I use it in the final presenation PowerPoint, I'll send you a SIMSOL Storm Team T-shirt with my thanks.

John, I have a question. Over the last few years, I've seen a dramatic increase in the application of metal roofs over shingled roofs. They generally will install firring strips over the shingles first. I've been told that this will allow condensation on the bottom side of the metal. The long term damage shows up around the 7th year or so. Do you see any truth to this ?

When you put the treated lumber furring strips on the roof for the metal roof to be attached to, it creates an air space which allows the air to flow from the fascia area of the drip line up to the ridge vents which will actually help lower the attic/roof temperatures. This air movement will dry out any moisture that might accumulate there. There is a co out of Arllington TX that sells all types of metal roofing that come with a lifetime (50 year) guarantee. They sell a copper standing seam that has a 100 year guarantee. This is the method they use for putting on the metal roofs. The first strips down (vertical) are run over and fastened to the rafters. The second strip is run horizontal and fastened to the vertical strips creating the air space. The horizontal strips are positioned depending on the size of the metal shingle so the metal roof is fastened to the horizontal strips. I don't think you will have a moisture problem if it is done this way.

I see the differance, the vertical strips. This would eleminate the moisture issue. You may not believe this, but I have yet to run across one with the vertical strips ! You've been a great help !

I was installing ss on the beach in Destin and the building inspector made us paint the treated strips before the metal was applied. Something to do with corrosion. Ever heard of this?

Never heard of it but I guess it makes since to either use pre-treat or treat/paint the wood. Sounds logical that a lot of moisture could be trapped under there for periods of time.
