Well, I went out and tried something else.  Here was my theory:  Go buy a tablet PC, and set it up with high-end voice recognition software.  That way, I could speak my estimate while carrying the tablet PC as I walk around a property.

The good news; the tablet PC works great.  Handles Xactimate significantly well, and I can carry it around (relatively easily) and estimate items.  I believe it will be a moderate time save for me.  I envision it can save about 10-15 minutes per claim. (And, by the number of claims we do a day, we all know that might add up to one-two more claims in a good day)

The bad news; the voice recognition software.  This was a pretty high end software.  It actually worked quite well...in the office.  Frankly, it worked exceptional in the office.  But, as soon as you changed environments, its accuracy would decrease.  I spent some time increasing the accuracy, and I probably got it to around 85-90% outdoors, but the stickler was if it made a mistake, it would often begin making mistakes when you tried to correct the mistake. Thus compounding the problem.

The result; using the on-screen keyboard on the tablet PC is way better than the Voice Recognition, and the tablet PC will save a little time (I think).

Alan,

Would the software have responded better if it was installed and/or calibrated (or whatever they call their setup) in the field where your voice would sounds different than in a office? If one didn't want to use a tablet PC, but would rather wait and do the actual estimate back "home," would the estimate input be quicker/easier than manual input?

I did attempt calibrating the software in the field and the office.  When I calibrated the software in the office, I'd say I was able to get it up to (approximately) a 95-98% accuracy rate.  It actually worked well.  However, even with that high accuracy rate, the speed difference between using the keyboard and the voice recognition was not that great.  In most instances, I felt as if I could use the keyboard/mouse to enter items faster.  Essentially, the voice recognition software would move the cursor around, so you had that little delay from when the software processed your voice command until it actually entered the item.

Hello & Good Fortune to all fellow adjusters !!! I was wondering how the tablet PC would work with Integri-Claim, if anybody knows??? What features should one look for in a tablet PC & what features should be avoided? Any recommendations as far as brand & model?Do you actually do the diagram & estimate while on the roof or scoping the loss or do you do it in the car after you finish your inspection??? Please shed some light, I as others are always interested in saving valuable time. Thanks to your anticipated replies.
