I am looking for suggestions on products to use for voicemail and efax in the field. What do the experienced IA's use instead of giving out their personal cell number? Thanks,

Depending on who you work for, voice mail may be provided. State Farm does this, and they provide your name and voice mail number to the insured. There are also voice mail services available and they can be found with internet search. To me, it is easier to give the insured my cell number to get in touch with me or leave a message. I receive very few calls from the insured, usually when they need to reschedule an inspection. I was advised by others not to give my cell number as I would get calls all hours of the night, but I never had any problem and my phone was on 24/7. If you do give the insured your cell number, make sure you thoroughly explain the results of your inspection and answer any questions they may have. This will eliminate most of your calls, at least it did for me. I have the basic eFax, but you can get an 800 or local number for $12.95/mo. I have never had the need for anything other than the basic eFax, but $12.95 is very reasonable should I need to upgrade. If I have to send documents, so far I have been able to convert them to PDF and email them.

Don't know about voice mail but PFax is great for receiving faxes for $ 3.95 per month. When you go sign up tell them I sent you and get a month free and I do also. Been using 3 years and no problems. Only recieve but thats primarily what I wanted. Thanks Tom Strickland

I use the $12.95/mo eFax for two reasons; 1) it gives me a local number for the convenience of my clients, and 2) the basic eFax is limited to 20 pages per month. The company gives me a pager and a voicemail box but I don't use either one. I use my personal cell phone because it allows me to provide immediate service to my clients, and frees me from listening to messages and then playing telephone tag. This has rarely been a problem. If someone calls too much or I don't want to (or can't) talk to someone - I don't answer the phone. I use the free trial version of PDF Factory to create PDF files.

I got a family plan on my cell and got a new number to give insureds. It works great. I use EFAX and it is very reliable. Yes it is more expensive but very reliable.

The company I worked with provided me a voice mail to give out to the Insureds. I did give out my personal cell number on a few occasions but never had a problem. I think that as long as the insured is informed and the claims process and the results of the inspection the phone won't explode at all hours of the night. I used the efax free service and found it to be very reliable.

Last year I used efax and was assigned a carrier voicemail number. Every morning (after all the initial contacts were completed) I set aside time to call all of those insureds that I hadn't spoken to in 4 or 5 days, using a spreadsheet that my "secretary" updated daily. Lo and behold, after 3 weeks it was rare for me to get more than 1 or 2 voicemails a day, even with as many as 70 claims outstanding. In other words, try to call them before they call you (or worse, their agent or the complaint line).
