Competing with the National Companies

After working as a staff adjuster and supervisor for the past 10 years I started my own independent business.

I handle boat and homeowners losses. I have extensive experience handling large catastrophe type claims, but because I have a family, I have opted to make a go of it in my area instead of "storm trooping".

After 4 months on the job, I am managing to make a living, but I have not yet exceeded my previous salary. I have found many insurance companies are reluctant to use anything but the large national independent adjusting firms. I am somewhat stumped by this as my experience as a supervisor was that the national companies do not have the experience to provide the work product that I can deliver and they are certainly not less expensive.

Over the past 4 months I have monitored this Web Site and noticed that there are a lot of independent adjusters, like myself, out there trying to make a go of it. I would suggest that instead of crying about how slow it is, or how difficult it is to get work, we should put our heads together to "brainstorm" or share ideas about how we can make it. What insurance companies will use the small independent firm and how do we go about soliciting that business?

I myself am very qualified at handling any type of Homeowner claim. However, I cannot handle material damage or injury claims as I have ZERO experience. Accordingly, I turn that work down. I am sure that makes me less appealing to some companies. Perhaps I would be better served, as would some of you, were we to team up with another independent who handles the types of claims that we do not.

Perhaps through the use of this web site, myself and others like me can form alliances and partnerships based on our individual needs and expertise.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
