As the owner of a mid-sized cat company, I do agree that requiring adjusters to take a certification course at their expense is asking a great deal. Especially when there is no guarantee of work. However, when an adjuster sends us his or her resume and it reflects that he or she has passed one or all of "that company's" certification courses, that adjuster will most likely be considered for work from our adjusting company to handle losses from any of our carrier/clients. When we have to use adjusters who have not worked for us in the past, we tend to use "Certified" adjusters before other adjusters without the certification (unless we receive a personal recommendation from someone who knows the adjuster).

The certification you receive by passing the exams reflects a degree of professionalism and commitment on your part. The certification is not only allowing adjusters to work for "that company"; it also makes you stand out to all the other companies looking for cat or part-time adjusters. We are always looking for adjusters who continue their education and commitment to the profession.

After the years of "megastorms" everybody seems to be an 'experienced' adjuster. With so many wannabes, it is difficult for those adjusters with the experience to distant yourselves from the pack. Certifications may not be the cheapest way to go but they are valid and a step in the right direction.

I personally would like to see NACA certify active members by requiring interested members to take a series of home-study courses and examinations and create a designation similar to CPCU after all the courses have been passed.

Replies to this idea are much welcomed...
