Hi everyone,

I just get put on a retainer by State Farm and think probably will be deploying soon.  Like everyone else's, my biggest problem is housing.  I have a family friend who is a manager of Holiday Inn Express and he is already making some phone calls to find me a place.  Are there any female adjusters who would want to share a suite with kitchenette?  Let me know via e-mail please.  Thanks and good luck to all..

I just noticed, Debby you are from Sacto, CA and I am here in San Francisco/Bay Area...how about teaming up?

James, (and other interested parties)

I just arrived in Mobile Wednesday evening and am parked in the WalMart lot across the freeway from the hotel that both Crawford and Pilot are using for storm offices. There is a Lowe's next door and I am going to talk with the manager there and also at the WalMart about your "circle the wagons" concept....

If you get the 'wagons' together & find you need someone to set up your wireless computer access for the group, my husband, Jim said that he doesn't understand what the problem is with communications. With a helicopter & unlimited resources, he said that even NO could be online asap.  He has 10+ years experience in phone/computer junk & loves to beat the system & offer free or low cost wireless when possible.  Couldn't hurt to look it over, right?  Obviously,  I can't talk computer geek... just forgive me.

Howdy compadres, I am here in Starkville, MS. Got to Jackson Tuesday night and gas lines were hours long. No lodging, as expected so I camped out at Loves in Caton. Am now at buddies house in Starkville which is about 170 miles from Hattiesburg which is where I will start working. Will be commuting South when we have the fuel and working claims for 2 days then head back up here and write up. They are rationing all fuel to $10 a vehicle and at $3/gallon 3 gallons will not get you far and going to the gas station could be a dangerous trip due to the panic and frustrations. If anybody is thinking about deploying in the nest week I would hold off unless you can haul enough fuel to carry you through and then you will need 24/7 security. Good lcuk to everyone and God Bless America.

I will be going to Pensacola on Friday to the USAA offices to pick up paperwork and claims. At that time I will know where I will be staging out of and will follow up on the possible location to set up a RV/Travel Trailer park for adjusters. I will also check out all the parks listed in Trailer Life Directory for possible vacancies in the area. Will start a different thread for those if I have any luck.

Don't break your neck getting here! Ain't nothing gonna happen anytime soon!

Here! Here!  Some companies are dispatching immediately which will only add stress to an already stressful situation with gas/food/water/accomodation shortages and very, very limited access!  The authorities require time to restore some of these things in addition to law and order!!

Mississippi was not ready for Katrina and they are still finding bodies. There will be little going on there until the search and rescue is complete.

Hello all
Im headed out friday mornin and have acess to a pop up camper but have some very real concerns about takin it.
Can anyone let me know if they r a real problem
first i am concerned about humidity damaging my computer and other equipment since the sides r canvas and not air tight.
Then the primary concern is security of the trailer and equipment while im gone. im sure the blue heeler that im takin will keep most people out but not all.
Are tyhese real concerns or am i just of the page ive never used a pop up so im in the dark.

I agree though last year at least there were still places to stay left standing and power was available quickly but this I just dont know

I would not be in a big hurry to head for the Gulf. New Orleans is going to be a nightmare and there are valid health concerns in the area. I recall driving from Ft. Lauderdale to Homestead during Andrew. Very draining to say the least.

A tip of the hat to you if you can camp in a tent and operate a mobile office. At least the weather will be cooling off.

There will be a lot of claims in the path of Katrina.
I'm thinking I'll wait till thigns settle down before heading out

To all those rushing in with campers, RV's etc. Be careful. There is chaos through the entire state, not just NOLA. People will rob, steal, etc, from trailers. People are out of control. It's not safe. There are reports of car-jackings everywhere in the state.

I'm staying put in Houston. There are plenty of daily claims since everyone left for this storm. Once things are under control and civilized, then bring on the claims.

Michael,

The only way to get here from West Texas is straight across on I-20 all the way to the Alabama state line. (See my thread on "Getting to Mobile from the West" for specific directions.) Already found a Hooter's! Just back over I-65 from the hotel where Crawford and Pilot are set up with storm offices. It was still boarded up for the storm and hasn't opened back up due to the dusk to dawn curfew still in effect here in Mobile. Picking up some claims tomorrow at the USAA offices. Have no idea where they will be right now.

I-10 to Baton Rouge then I-12 to Hammond and I assume beyond, is open. Lots of Convoys, military trucks east bound and refugee busses west bound. I arrived in Hammond last night to find the hotel i had rented was given to someone else, i slept in my truck. There were people sleeping in parking lots of hotels and other companies. I  woke up, no where to get food. gas lines loooong and people would stand out side of their vehicles while waiting, this resulted in words exchanged which resulted in blows being exchanged. Drove to Baton Rouge around 11:30 and city was under lockdown due to a riot at the shelter. So, being out of options, i came home and told my boss that he should probably tell the other adjusters to wait about 10 days or more before going in, or they will be wasting time and hotel money, if they even find a hotel (doubtful).

I-12 takes you over to the Mississippi state line where it meets back up with I-10.

DOES YOU NO GOOD BECAUSE I-10 IS CLOSED ALL THE WAY ACROSS MISSISSPPI EXCEPT FOR EMERGENCY SEARCH & RESCUE TEAMS. STAY OUT OF THERE BECAUSE YOU WILL ONLY BE IN THE WAY AND YOU WILL USE RESOURCES LIKE GAS THAT ARE NEEDED FOR THAT!

Might want to call the hotel directly and confirm the day before you leave. Lots of adjusters had reservations before the storm, but evacuees are still at every hotel. They can't go home. I had confirmation numbers for rooms in Baton Rouge, but they are not accepting new arrivals. The hotel is understandibly full. That's why I'm staying local until things settle down.

there is fuel but it takes a while to get and according to what hes hearing power will be back within the next ten days and fuel will be easier to get then
people  r comin in from the rural areas by the hundreds some have been trapped for three days and had to cut thier way out of thier home town ( shoulda heard that story !!!!! wow)
there r no hotels to be had at the moment they r either damaged beyond operation or have no power or r full even with out power

If you have generator power in a remote location, why couldn't you use a satellite internet source hooked up to a wifi for distirbution to other adjusters in your group?

I tried Direcway satellite last year after Frances. It was horrible with AOL (I use it to talk to my kids) and we could have no more than 2 users on at a time. Support told me that it was a latency issue (The time it takes the signal to bounce to and from the sat) combined with WIFI. It's also about $700 to start with a contract and the dish is about 3'x5')

Kevin, that is probably the best damn advice ever posted or given on CADO to cat adjusters. If only some of the hard heads around here would listen.

Thanks for the update and stay safe.

Talked with a friend in Mobile last night. There are lines for gas. Power is still out in many places, No hotel rooms. Period. They will be booked until the utility and tree people are finished with their job.

Be foolish, head there now and be part of the problem.
