Has anyone heard of or been to the Central School of Insurance. My husband and I were thinking about attending an upcoming seminar where they talk about the following:   Description: A 4-day state "Designation" program for the all-lines (public, independent or company) Adjuster's licenses. The program discusses the following topics: property, package policies, liability, miscellaneous coverages/policies and automobile to include the state statutes and claims practices. The state exam is waived upon successfully completing this program.

We're open to any new advice as a husband and wife team in getting started. Especially equipment that may by needed and how to set up to be the most efficient.

Thanks,
KLD

I think one idea maybe to contact the State Insurance Dept. for the
state they are waiving the exam for, and confirm that they are able to
proctor and waive the exam. Good Luck

I am right in the middle of the four day Florida class. It is pretty simple. I am in there with customer service, sales and public adjusters. everyone takes the same class. I will have my license next sunday.

What city are you taking the class? Am I correct to understand that you will actually have your adjuster's license when you are finished? Is this a CAT adjusters license or what kind? I was glad to hear that the class is informative. You never know until you get there. Any other information you can tell me about this class I would greatly appreciate.

Good Luck in the business

Memo to RD1163: The important thing for you or any new 'adjuster wannabee' to remember is that your 'first license' needs to be your home state adjusting license. If you are a resident of one of the 33 states which require an adjuster's license, then that state license will be required when you work in any of the other 32 states which require home state licensing. Just to point out by example, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida all require home state licenses for their residents and out of state residents
(* or in special circumstances, some states will allow a non-resident to sit for an instate non-resident's license by examination).

All of these schools which focus on adjuster's licensing, will teach you how to take and hopefully pass the adjuster's license exam for that state. They will not teach you much about the insurance policies nor will they teach you how to adjust a loss. In a very real sense, they are simply a 'license' which allow you to go out and screw up the claim for some innocent homeowner who's life has been devastated by Mother Nature. May God forbid that you bring even more misery into the lives of these distraught insureds through your ignorance, naivete and incompetence.

You simply cannot learn the nuance of the various insurance policies, how to properly apply insurance coverages, nor how to be an adjuster and properly adjust claims in 4 days. And to think otherwise is sheer stupidity if not pure insanity.

I attended Central Insurance School in St. Petersburg Florida.  JimF is absolutely correct in that these schools teach you nothing about insurance or about being an insurance adjuster.  These schools simply go over the material required to pass the state examination.  One year after I attended Central Insurance School this school and the state of Florida reached an agreement that if you attend a 4-5 day approved course you will automatically receive your state license with no exam.  I personally felt that this was very belittling (not sure if that is the correct word) as I was  proud to have passed what I considered a difficult exam.  Now anyone who sits through the class and appears interested with their eyes propped open will receive their license.  Anywho, what I am getting at is these classes will get you your license but you must still learn insurance adjusting through other means.

I also went to Central School. It was a very limited attempt to explain the different insurance policies. It is a good starter course, but as others have said, you should attempt to get more education on policies. I also attended the Hurriclaim
Adjusting class, a 5 day class that went over policies, IntegriClaim software and general information on claims adjusting. You can visit their website at http://www.hurriclaimadjusters.com/ and check out their free and paid training courses. They are suppose to start another 5 day course soon. They are getting ready to implement a hands-on training course in a warehouse where you will actually do claims on roofs, interiors and exteriors. Hope this helps.

JIMF,

I  can appreciate your concern for "adjuster wannabees", but you seem to have a very, very bad attitude about someone wanting to better themselves and their family and even just learning a new career. I have done alot of research in this field and know that attending one class IS NOT going to make me an expert. I have 2 mentors that are ready to let me ride with them now, but I feel I could be better prepared if I invest the time in a little education. I only ask questions in this forum to be informed NOT critized. Since reading this forum, I notice that you have an awful lot of time to talk the negative for those of  us wanting to better educate ourselves. Sure I agree there are always bad apples in every industry, but you don't know me and probably others that you have tried to discouraged from becoming a 'NEWBEE".  We only ask questions to be informed. The only dumb question is the one not asked. I consider myself a very cautious, well educated, with strong work ethics, and know that customer service is extremely important. My reason for doing this is partialy for financial reasons, and clearly understand the uncertainty of the income and the work, but I also have a heart to want to help those who have lost to regain theirs lives and dignity. If we can't help our fellow human, brother, friend, then why are we here !!!!!!

Have a blessed day, because I KNOW I will !!!

RD, since the CADO Forum is a "public school" as opposed to a private institution of learning, the school principal demands that I teach down to the bottom students, which I know can be boring as hell as well as seem condescending to you rocket scientists intermingled amongst us. It is never easy with a large audience to please everyone, so I try to deliver the message in such a manner as to appeal to those students in the middle. If I failed in helping you, then that is my fault and not yours. Mea culpa.

Please accept my apologies for the way the system sometimes operates, but I really am trying to help newer adjusters, and if I can save them time, money and heartache, then I apologize to no one. The  sad truth is that 90% of the new people who will come out to work this storm season as a cat adjuster without proper training and education won't be here in adjusting 3 years from now. The other sad truth is that less than 6 months from now, the CADO Forum will be filled with post after post from disgruntled newbies who got screwed out of what they earned by unscrupulous vendors or 'mentors'. It truly becomes imperative to Know Before You Go. Go back and read and review the old posts in this CADO Forum and you will discover the same kinds of questions from new adjusters right after every hurricane of years past, as well as the same or similar warnings from the experienced adjusters.

By the way, I commend the following insurance education resources and schools to each and every adjuster or person wanting to become an adjuster.

www.valenational.com

www.aicpcu.org

www.scic.com

There are no other insurance schools or resources in America that can touch or compare with any of the three listed above. I have personally been heavily involved with all three, so my endorsement is based on personal experience and knowledge.

Try them. You can't go wrong.

RD1163:  I would not want to have someone with a 4-day claims class under his belt adjusting my loss.
What the 4 hurricanes last year in FL showed is this:  Inexperienced and incompetent adjusters who could not even read a dec page, much less the actual policy, screwed up so many claims that their messy, incomplete files caused long waits for insureds.  They told insureds their carriers will send them a check for X dollars in Y days when they had no authority to do so.  They told insureds something was "definitely" covered when that particular insured did not buy that particular coverage.
All of these just-licensed-but-should-not-be adjusters left behind a long trail of unhappy insureds, and agents and carriers were left holding the bag, as it were.  These guys gave good adjusters a bad rep in FL.

I do not know whether there's adjuster concensus on this, but I don't think the desire to help people should be the primary reason for getting into adjusting.  Your aim should be to do a fair and professional job.  That's it.
If you were a green grocer, you really don't want an employee helping that little old lady by giving her more than she paid for.  He is being a humanitarian, but is he being fair to you?

Considered getting the license in 95. Ordered and recieved from the state the study material and test exams. I have an AIC and thought I was looking at the bar exam. Now you can invest in a little time ( 4 days) and be a florida adjuster.Sure dont seem fair for the adjusters that did it the hard way.One thing for sure if this is the case there is going to be a monster mop up. The question is who has the guts to be adjuster number two? After all the mess these poor people have been through.

Central Insurance School does NOT provide the liscense. They provide certification so that you can apply to the state for your liscense.

I have dealt with Central and would strongly recommend against them. If you are located near thier school in florida and looking for a local program I would recommend.

http://www.spcollege.edu/CT/Regulated_Industries_Classes/insurance.htm

The Accredited Claims Adjuster 6.20 program. It is not only cheaped but it DOES provide you the state 6.20 liscense without taking the state exam.

I also strongly suggest some knowledge or training in appraisal or construction as well as some sensitivity training.

At the very least the Regsitered Customer Service class also offered at the college.
