I know the feeling on the cash flow getting smaller. I set up a separate account once I started to get a little cash flow and set aside a "deployment fund" so that I don't have to dig so deep. It was tough for me too in the beginning. As far as responding, I have a tote packed with all my gear and can be out the door within an hour depending on how far I am away from the house when the call comes. Meanwhile I just try to take all the classes and get all the certificiations that I can get to make me more productive and more deployable. But that adds to the expense. RITA got me going and it's up to me to keep rolling.....

I am new in this business and I wanted to know what I need to do to get started. Who do I need to contact Insurance Companys or a contractor that hires adjusters.
What courses do I need to take to be familiar with the business. Is it possible (by law) to team up with someone experienced in the business.
I know these questions may seem a bit rediculous to some of you but I need to learn all I can as fast as I can but I want to go the right direction to begin with so I dont waste a lot of time and money like some of you did.
I would like to know the good  the bad and the ugly.

I thank you for any help.

All the training in the world will not prepare you for the devistated customers begging for advise - try downloading 100 claims and trying to respond to all their needs.  I have one advise for you - SWAG it!!!  SILLY WILD ASS GUESS, until you don't have too!!!!  I have been an adjuster for 9 years and I got started with PILOT.  I worked staff for Allstate and I was floored by the number of PILOT adjusters that could only spell their name and say adjuster.  Anyone can get on with an independent if the time is right; file clerk, house cleaner, landscaper, chimney sweep, etc....  YOU GET THE PICTURE!!!!   GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jusat hang out and wait for 3 - 4 cat 3 or better storms to hit the mainland on or near the same timeframes, and hold your hand up!

I got a letter back from them with a number to call. I didn't meet the minium requirements of the 4 years experience (I guess being honest on the application kinda makes them unable to certify me). I did get a reference number to give them whenever I call them but I just haven't called. I mainly attended for the info and the CEU's. I guess that I'll have to get back with them when theres a storm or in a couple more years. Congrats on your new NFIP Willinsky.

Its been a long time since I posted here, but I have been busy doing daily claims here in Houston,TX. Sept 14th I will be attending IntegriClaim classes in Dallas for three days as PilotCat called last night and offered them to me. Could always use that additional training. Still waiting for the next storm to hit so I can be deployed again, good thing I have the Daily Claims to work here in Houston till then. registered with NobleCE to take 30 credits 3 courses $75.00 for all , that should fill in any free time that may show up. Back to reading my Ethics course 4 credits Consumer Protection Consumer II, You All Have Fun !

Ok, guys and gals.....here is the scoop on PILOT.  I have worked for them since 1995 and as with any CAT company , ie  Worley, Pilot or who ever....you get day rate in training....your suppose to be seasonee when you apply for this job.  When there is a Catastrophic event happening and people are in need of your assistance.  These companies do not have time to sit and check every single adjuster out...So dont lie on your resumes.  if you say you are seasoned and skilled that is what they expect..when you list what you know...ie. exactimate, integra, adp, ccc, mitchell or what ever,...that is what they expect you to know....you do get orientation and briefing upon arrival to a storm..and all the classes and training are available to you if you lack in that area.  I love working for PILOT and I myself along with about 500 other adjusters that work for the company have not had any real pay issues...minor yes, but nothing that could not be fixed immediately.....so dont be dissin on a company that you had a bad expeirence with right off...maybe you caught it on a bad day..it happens.....with everyone...

I'm so glad that one of Curtis Pilot's top Public Affairs Representatives gave us the scoop and advised us not to "be dissin" her company.  With all of the hundreds of blackjack dealers they hired to work their Allstate claims stemming from Katrina, it's no wonder they now require you to be "seasonee" with at least 5 years of experience.  They must have caught Pilot on a good day.

I was hoping they would let me work for them cus I hammered stakes while working construction.  I'll just tell them I have 5 years experience.  Oh rats, but you just said we couldn't lie on our resume.  I guess I'll take one of those 20 hour estimajuster-xactimait'n courses and float right on up to the top with the rest of the cream.  I'll get on with Pilot for sure since I told the truth and Rhonda said I could make it.

Mirror or Bob and anyone else,

Let me say this about Pilot.  Whatever your experience was that jaded you against this company is unfortunate.  There are always two sides to the story and I don't think you want to air it out in public.

I am not an employee of Pilot, but had previously worked for them for 8 years. (If it were not for personal reasons and an offer to work for the premier carrier, I would still be there.)  I never once had a payroll issue or a promise from them that was not kept.  This is one of the best vendors you could want to work for.  Nothing about the last two years have been normal and whatever you may have experienced was more likely an anomaly vs the normal protocol.

I am sure there are many others on and off this website that would agree and don't want to see their company "dissed".

First day of class is done and it was a long day. Started 8am finished 6pm, learned a lot of things that will come in handy in the future. IntegriClaim has many uses that I never applied in my past estimates which I will be using in the future. We went over Insureds Policy's, definitions what is covered and what isn't. The last hour I was just hanging in there, But when we were released from class I came out of my trance and crawled back to the Motel. We had a Quiz got one wrong but I know where I made my mistake. TOMORROW its on to writing estimates, these three days will improve my skills by 100 percent. The Instructer was Great, Very knowledgeable More Latter...

Classes are now completed and it was worth the trip to gain the aditional  knowledge for writing estimates. Now back to completing my continuing education courses while I have this free idle tme. Before you know it the storm will arrive and the free time will not exist anymore.

NFIP certification already? Didn't I see a post of 9/30/05 that he had passed his Texas license test and got his license on 8/29/2005? Don't
you have to be licensed for 3 years before becoming NFIP certified?
Is there something wrong with this math?

Nope.  Many, many adjusters now have their NFIP card and had only zero years of exp.

Yet, the rules will be enforced now.  Don't expect the NFIP to deviate in the absence of supply/demand issues.

There is a program in effect that certain vendors can oversee an individual and his work and when they feel he is capable vouch for him/her and length of experience can be waived or shortened.
