With gas prices the way they are now and no relief to be in sight I fixed my gas budget deficit quickly while working claims in LA.  I started off with a Suburban with extension ladder in tow.  BIG MISTAKE!!!  Working a 350 mile radius soon took its toll on my wallet.  In steps in my VW Jetta 1.8T 4 Cylinder.  36 mpg and got me down even the worst back roads at Toledo Bend.  A 16' Gorilla ladder fit nicely in the trunk with tape measures, putty knives and all other incidentals neatly tucked into the cargo net storage area.  I was laughed at by some insureds saying I would never get on their roof without a ladder then to their surprise out of my R/C car came a ladder and in the front seat a fully equipped mobile office with laptop, inverter and printer.  This all served me very well...BTW, I am, 6'6" tall and was comfortable the entire time.

I have been dedicated to Ford trucks since before becoming an independent, until I rode with an adjuster driving a Dodge Grand Caravan while working out of the Luling, LA State Farm Catastrophe Office.  The Caravan held both the large and small Gorilla ladders and could have held an additional ladder plus it held all other equipment and computer.  I was told it averages 24 miles per gallon.  I have not purchased the Grand Caravan but I am seriously considering it.

Hey Rob Markovics,
If you're in Florida, come see the 'Yella Dilla'. Bet you like it more than your Chevy!  Mine has 6 wheels and all the gadgets, including moon roof and built in power inverter. Oh, yeah.... It holds a ladder well too!

Having fun in Florida.  Like the Xmas lights on the trailer?  True adjuster trailer trash.

Paige

Jim and Matt,

Let's hope Paige doesn't wear a size 15.

I tried a radical new approach. Bought a 2006 Winnnebago View with the new Dodge Sprinter diesel engine because of the lack of housing in LA. This was my only vehicle I lived in the View, parked in RV parks, Wal Mart parking lots, church parking lots, and an insurance agents office parking lot. I think I shaved about 2000 miles off, by not having to return to a motel/apartment. Also saved a lot of windshield time which I could use doing estimates. Made all my meals in the RV, so saved on food, plus it took a lot less time. Didn't have to load and unload my car each day, or pack an uppack when I switched locations. Because of the extra traffic in LA, I often would travel close to my scope sights the night before when traffic was light. I used a Verizon PCMCIA data card for my internet connection. Most important, I never had to look for a bathroom.

The View has a door on the side where I could slide a foldable ladder inside. You could also hang a 16' on the rear RV ladder

The View is 23.5 feet long, but I never had trouble parking, or turning around. Only once did I have to turn around because of a low hanging wire. I did have to swerve around a lot of low branches, but it wasn't a problem.

The View got 14.5 MPG, I bought it on a 15 year loan. First tuneup is at 50,000 miles.

I did claims in 3 North Shore Parishes. If I had to do down town New Orleans I'm not sure it would have worked as well.

Hey Paige,

Ok the Ford does have 2 more wheels, and do not forget the spare. Keep a clean machine and have to admit it looks great and performs great too. Gotta love those Ford gears!  Did a few mods since the last post of my truck. I am still in Hattiesburg, MS doing cleanup here with Pilot & State Farm. I also have a place in Florida and might swing through sometime soon. Drop me a line and let me what is going on there in the Great State of Florida.

Stay Cool and keep the rig clean. Later

Hey Paige, your set up looks as good as you do (I better explain that a bit - i.e. comparatively a great set of toys well maintained versus your pleasant self etc), and likely is as professionally set up as you are in handling your claims.

Geez, I don't know if that first part came out right or not, I'm starting to blush, just take it as a compliment please.

Cheers

It just came to my attention that Bubba, 'The Marko Man' is an old bud from a cold winter gig in Chicago quite a few years ago.

Man, there is no comparison of your little white Chevy to Paige's 6 footed Ford.

What you didn't tell us Bobby is where you hang your carbines in that little truck?

But, it is our State Farm Lenny, who wins for the best pictures of rigs and trailered trailed trash; wish I could find the pictures from last year or so and bring them forward - truly symbolmatic of a "Man's Domain".

Good to hear that you are busy big fella, take care.

Dear Clayton,

I know this is hard to believe but the war is over. The Marine Corps still lives on (although when I left it was a sad day) but there was this one claim where there was sand in the front yard.....well the exhaust may appear to be a dual pipe but is actually a 50 Cal. JOKING>>. How in the heck are you. You made me laugh then and still keep me laughing. Yes Paige has more wheels and the load master photos are great,  BUT would it launch from a LST Carrier and can it assault through 8-12 seas and navigate from the beachhead to the bush??????????

Nothing like the smell of diesel that gets me going! Keep in touch all and this forum has made me laugh many times.

PS Paige, How do you keep the Christmas lights on the Yella Dilla cruising on I 95 or I 10? Just curious. Later Cool Ones

Going to use a colorful metaphor here, Uh? oh Jovial !

Gas for ford Ranger -------------------------------------  $ 50.00 per week
Rent for condo split with another adjuster----------------- $ 325.00 per month
Being 15-20 miles from my claims and thinking Rob Markovics is saving money with his truck -------- Priceless!!!

No hard feelings to anybody (bob) just kidding, this is the first time I posted anything on this website.  Just got off the phone with my account and maybe I should be spending more money on the road.  The tax man is taking his share this year. In my opinion the best vehicle is the one you feel most comfortable in and saves you the most money.  Good luck to all and be safe out there.

There you go Matt,

You have the feel good thread, and you have made a post....good for you. As long as we are all happy that is what life is all about, Remember a happy adjuster is a wealthy adjuster. It helps in all aspects of life. Yankee....I thought I was the Yankee from PA. Yes Clayton is up there in our neighboring Canada but that really isn't Yankee is it? Hattiesburg MS is slowing down quickly and might end soon, for the update from here, but check this out. If mediation kicks they told me it could be 6 months to a year. How is that for a dichotomy!

Rule # 1: Never buy a vehicle that upsets the wife ( to big, to high etc), The wife shall buy a new house when your gone.
Rule # 2 Never over accessorize the truck, she will go and furnish the house
Rule # 3 When the truck pulls up to the new house with all the new furniture, Run do not walk to the nearest Honda dealer and get a matching Honda 4x4 to stick in the bed.
Rule # 5 Coming soon to Cado forum near you!

Be happy

Right now, the best adjuster vehicle for me is the one I have in the driveway:  a '05 Taurus, carries my camera and ladder, free gas, drives good, did I mention free gas, has a 12V plug for the inverter that I use for the laptop, all the gas I need for free, back seat folds down for long ladder storage, etc, etc,

The best part of the whole deal is no car payment.

The Taurus is provided by my employer now that I'm a staffy kinda guy.

rent a car, don't use your own,  write it off at tax season. I used my brand new truck on the last storm big mistake.  line up all of your 2 story's  and trade rig's with someone else for a day.  I saw a few experienced adjusters doing this , they helped me through some difficult claims in exchange for using 32 ft ladder ( which is way too big of a ladder for me to have, nothing more than a 24 has ever been required in my experience)

Are you saying your preference is a smaller ladder, or that anything larger than a 24 is overkill and not necessary for an adjuster to lug around?

For those of us that like to self insure to the extent the law allows, this site has a list of cars and trucks that we can buy when they hit three years old for $.30 on the $1.00 ($3K to $9K range).
