Hi Robi,  I'm also a newbee so can't give any insight on Vale National, but liked to ask you a couple of question.

I'm also a newly licensed adjuster ( Florida ), but as yet have not entered the field. Before attempting to go out I would like to have some knowledge behind me.

How did you get sponsored to Vale ?

I'm hoping to take the one week Property Insurance Course to see how I handle a week of training before signing up for three weeks of intensive study. What are your feelings on this ?

And lastly, have you taken any software courses ?

Appreciate your's or anyone's input.  Thank you Joe Melbourne ( e-mail: timesthree@att.net )

Hi Joe.

I've been licenced for 2 years and have attended 2 CAT's.  I'm working for Cunningham Lindsey Canada and they are my sponsor.

I don't know how I will do on a 3 week intensive course but I don't think it's that bad.  I work with Xactimate and learned by myself only, no courses.

I attended a 2 week Vale Training Course in Fresno in 2000 - Gene Hensley, the Director of Vale took the class. You are lucky to go. The learning experience is excellent - I still use the Vale book as a reference guide. The Vale instructors have been around a long time and the information they have is incredible.

I went to Vale in Hershey, PA. in 1999. Excellant staff, training, I would have been lost without the training. I cannot say enough good things about Vale Tech.

I just completed the 3 week course held in PA. It was well worth the time and expense to attend.

Robi,

Oswe had the room next door to mine at the Holiday Inn in Mechanicsburg, PA.  We just finished the three week Property Adjuster class at Vale.  You used the word intense; that was the correct choice of word.  Don't worry!  It is intense, but NEVER boring.  The course is crafted to cram as much information into your head as it can hold and they do it in a way that seems to make it stick.

I taught myself Xactimate 24 mostly using "sketch".  Vale has Xactimate 2002 loaded on their computers...and they teach "line item" method rather than "sketch".  It wasn't that hard to make the transition, but if you know about the "line item" in advance and taught yourself "sketch", you might benefit from a few hours of experiment with line item method.

Our group of Xactimate users seemed to always finish last behind the other estimating programs.  If that happens, don't let it bother you.  Xactimate is a very powerful program and can do things the other programs may not do.  Don't be afraid to ask your instructor when you need to know an Xactimate trick.

As intense as it was for me, I feel a certain sense of envy as I think of the experience you are about to have at Vale.  You are about to have a wonderful learning experience.

Good Luck!
Randy Cox

I will be attending the three week property adjusting course at Vale National in March at the PA location.  The price for hotel accomodations alone if Vale makes the reservation on my behalf is $1596.  I was able to make reservations through Priceline at the same Holiday Inn that Vale would have made them at, and include round-trip airfare from Tampa to PA, for $1435.  By booking my own travel as a package I was able to shave about $500 off the total cost of this trip - I expect my total investment for these three weeks to be approximately $5,000, so every little bit helps!  Hope this information is helpful to anyone else making travel arrangements to attend Vale.

I attended Mechanicsburg in 1996, and was very impressed. I was just starting to think about becoming an adjuster. Came home and went to work within two weeks.
Baptism by fire. My instructor was Alan Anderson, and have high regard for him and the program.

good luck.

Johnny,

Someone told me today that they thought that Gale Hawkins of Powerclaim is now willing to Sponsor new adjusters to Vale. I am not sure about the veracity of this rumor but Gale is always willing to help new adjusters in any way that he can, so my guess is that it would seem to be true.

I no longer serve as a Vale Sponsor so I am sorry that I cannot be of help.

Good Luck and Best Wishes.

I received the following email from a CADO reader this evening. My response follows:

*************************************************************************

Quick question if I may....When I registered to attend Vale in March I called them to get clarification on the sponsorship issue.  They explained that the sponsor just had to be someone who was in an industry that was somehow related to claims (construction, agent, another adjuster etc.)  As a licensed Florida agent, I was able to sponsor myself and did so.  Now to the point - I noticed in past postings you had offered to help with the sponsorship and now choose not to do so.  Would like to know what you see as the potential pitfalls of that offer and your reasons for refraining.  Wondering if the financial obligation you agree to when signing has a real possibility to come back and bite you in the arse or if it is just a general disgust with the caliber of people trying to enter this business.  No offense taken by this newbee if that's the case - having encountered many on my side of the industry who have no business holding a license, I can only imagine the frustration many seasoned adjusters feel at what is happening on the claims end.  Or is there some other headache associated with sponsorship to Vale that has escaped my attention?  I really have no intention of extending an offer to assist with Vale to another new person at this point in time. - my focus is on getting the very best training I possibly can and I visit CADO daily for the sole purpose of learning from those who've gone before me.  Besides, I think there is something to be said for overcoming the hurdles (like sponsorship) through one's own initiative.  Just curious about your own stance on the issue as something to file away for possible future reference.  I apologize for the (caffeine induced) long-windedness.  I appreciate any feedback you might have and your many postings on CADO.  There is so much practical knowledge shared that can never be learned in a classroom........

Respectfully,

LJ

**************************************************************************

I can only imagine the frustration many seasoned adjusters feel at what is happening on the claims end.

LJ,

I think you have figured out my discontent and desire to no longer assist new adjusters in entering this profession.

The Vale sponsorship requirement is something that has puzzled me since I spoke to them about it last summer.  I called and spoke to a Vale representative and was told that any business could sponsor a Vale applicant.  Before I mentioned to her that I was a self-employed agent, and found out I could therefore sponsor myself, I mentioned that we had a friend who owned a factory.  She said that would be fine.  I said “Is the sponsor financially liable for the tuition of the student?”  She said “No, you must pay us before the class starts and we don’t take credit cards.”  I said “If the sponsor does not need to be involved in the insurance industry and has no financial responsibility, what is the point of requiring a sponsor?”  She said “That’s just the way we do it.”

I still haven’t figured that one out.

Mat,

That's true and I agree with you and Jim if the sponsor were being billed for the tuition and having to collect from the student.  I was told the student must pay by certified check before the class starts so where is the danger for the sponsor and why require one in the first place?
