We have had Verizon (it was originally called something else, I can't remember :) for at least 11-12 years. There are few places nationwide where we are not able to get a signal for the cell phone from upstate NY to FL to San Diego, CA and it has gotten better every year. When Nelson & I decided we needed a second phone a couple years ago we went with Nextel because we would have the "walkie-talkie" feature with our kids who live in other states and use Nextel. The Nextel coverage area is very good too but the Verizon has worked in some areas where we couldn't get a signal for the Nextel. In the NY Adirondack mountains we could only get the Verizon signal and the Verizon seems to work inside more buildings that have poor signal for cell phones.
We are about to change over to all Verizon for several reasons:
1. The local Nextel dealer puts a sign on their door that says "back in 30 minutes" but does not say what time they left. (I think this is the biggest reason!)
2. The "walkie-talkie" thing is kind of a pain in the butt as I always get beeped in a public place and end up calling whoever has beeped me anyway.
3. Verizon has a plan for small business under which, if you have 5 lines (and your internet card counts as one) and a Federal ID# you can get 8% off the total bill. We can add a couple lines to share the minutes with what we will save from the discount.
4. We have had the Verizon internet card for a couple months. We have only traveled from Iowa to Texas with it but had only about 2 hours of the 16 hour trip where we could not connect. We are taking off for FL in a couple days and from the coverage map it looks like it should work most of the way. It will be nice to have that billed with the cell phones and not get a separate bill. Also, it works at about the speed of dial-up at our house which is too far from town to get DSL or cable internet. The $60 per mo charge for the internet card is offset by the $20 per month dial-up account we no longer need.
5. It's less expensive to have all the phones with the same company and share minutes.
6. The local Verizon store is always open when they are supposed to be! (Although, when we told them we wanted the internet card they had to call Verizon as they had never heard of it!)
It's a jungle out there in the wireless world and my best suggestion is really research your needs, the areas you will using it the most and the cost before making a commitment. The contract on my Nextel phone is up on 1/8/06 and it would cost the same $200 to cancel it today that it would have a week after it started 2 years ago.
Also, read the papers that come with the bill. We recently switched Nelson to a plan with 300 more minutes for $20 less per month. I said "It would have been nice if Verizon had let us know this was available" and they said (you guessed it, right?) there was a notice in your bill telling you this was available.

I have gone through AT&T before it was Cingular, T-Mobile and have been with Verizon for the last three years. I won't change. Yes their prices are a bit higher but the service is excellent, still native english speakers, and the coverage is unbeatable.
Being in New Orleans after Katrina I put this company through it's paces. They were excellent!! I was talking with another adjuster who has Nextel/Sprint and he couldn't make calls, couldn't receive calls, dropped calls. While I was merrily making problem free calls!

Have had Verizon since they were Primeco,( the little pink man). I've never switch, but did get a second cell phone from Nextel which was required by a company I did some work for ( not adjusting ). Didn't like the service and they were more expensive than Verizon.
Also, I live in Palm Beach Country, Florida and during our past two years of storms my Verizon has been the most reliable service on block. Several neighbors have already switched.

I have had Cingular since 9-30-05. I have the Sony card. The service has been TERRIBLE since the day I bought it. I have been to the store in Texas at least 10 times. Now in Florida, I've been to the store over 5 times. I have countless hours on the phone trying to get the card to work.
Cinglar tells me it's the card. Could be. They would never try another card to determine that. Up until two weeks ago, I had spotty service. very few bars. Now is kaput. No service at all.
I think they sold me a used card that was turned in with problems.
I have experienced the worst customer service from Cingular than from any other company I have had to deal with. Even the credit card companies. They had a special going that if I bought my Sony card, I would get a rebate for the price of the card. It's now Jan 6, 2006, and I have yet to receive that.
I have two phones with Cingular. Guess what happens when those contracts end. I'll run over those phones and send what's left back to Cingular in a box.

Cingular has given excellent reception and service anywhere I was on assignment except for the New Orleans area where it almost useless. Verizon seemed to work without flaw in the New Orleans area.

I've been with at&t for decades. I've had cell phones with them for years; I had GPRS unlimited data for internet access with my PDA's blue tooth to Nokia computer phone for two years. It was always a bit slow because of the limited memory on my T1 palm pda but it worked. I could trade stocks, and arbitrage items for sale by running an ebay completed sale search with my pda. Because I was early to use this technology or some reason, my account allowed me to tether my laptop on occasion and it was faster than dial-up and still unlimited data.
Then Cingular took over with promise of continued same service, but immediately they charged for data via thether with notebook. My wife and I had unlimited mobil to mobil national plan (phones)....no roaming charges. I cancelled GPRS unlimited internet and got a Verizon air card. They promised all else would remain the same, but when I went to PA for three weeks of school..........I accumulated over $500 in roaming charges on my phone and $200 on my wifes.
They've cut mine in half and all of my wife's charges, and we are still negotiating. As soon as I settle.....I'm pulling the plug on Cingular. They are trying to force me to buy new phones, Cingular style (without the little chip) to continue national plan with no roaming....it would cost the same but another $500 or so for new phones.
That's bait and switch. I'm done with 'em. I'll file a complaint with FCC when it is all over, but they won't do anything. Pity, at&t was always state of the art.
Verizon has it's own demons; I know that too!

NEXTEL OVER ALL HAS WORKED THE BEST.
I have cingular, verizon and company porvided nextel. While sitting in car making call from all three phones "ONLY" nextel worked. I think cingular/ATT is horrible. Phones prove it even when connection is there and just "HEARING" the difference makes the difference.
IMHO!!!!

Hmmm. This thread is making me have second thoughts about Cingular. I was considering switching to Cingular's "All over network" because their coverage area seemed to be pretty broad. But several have stated they have had trouble with them. Are there any good reports about Cingular?

Seems tha Verizon is a pretty strong candidate. I have Verizon for both my wireless phone and air card and always have service...
Depending on who you work for (IA Company) you may want to check with Verizon because you can get a discount. (i.e Pilot employment will get you 5% off, I believe) Check for yourself...

I could go on and on about Verizon as well but it would be a repeat of how they are light years ahead of Cingular. With Cingular I had to go out into the driveway to get one bar and a so so connection then Verizon put in a new tower that I was roaming off of so I just moved to Verizon. At tradeshows I do much better in buildings than those with Cingular as a rule. The Verizon air card naturally is tops as well. I asked some adjusters before I purchased an air card and Verizon was the most used because it worked best on CAT duty I was told repeated. If Verizon does not stumble they may own the air waves some day but as we all know the past is not always repeated. Friends tell friends about Verizon.
One thing I did learn when I picked up my air card recently is that cell towers are not permitted within something like 5 miles of a state line and when traveling cell/air card service may be unstable the last 5 miles out of a state and the first 5 into the next state.

Have used several carriers over the years, but have been with Nextel since they opened. Now with the Nextel/Sprint merger there are and will continue to be additional towers and sources to access.
I tried Verizon, Cingular and other air cards, and settled on Sprint/Nextel.
Other than a location outside Little Washington, NC During Hurricane Bonnie, I have had minimal problems. There is always someplace to get them fixed, exchanged, upgraded etc. Even on-line , overnight shipping, and payment options.
Would we switch, perhaps, if there were something faster, better, less expensive, as reliable, etc. But for now, the unlimited minutes, Coast to Coast walkie talkie, and other benefits for the price, I'll stay where i am.

I have had Cingular for 5 years and have had no problems. I've traveled coast to coast and have never incurred any kind of roaming charges. I have found a few dead spots in rural areas, but I've usually had no signal problems. Several friends in the West Texas area have received notices that service is to be dropped and they have had to change carriers. Cingular does not have a tower in these areas and thier operating costs are more than the revenues received. I am on the fringe area and, so far, have not received a letter.
If I were to change, my first choice would be Verizon, but it is not available in this area, which is surprising as the San Angelo area telephone service is provided by Verizon. I have not heard anything good about T Mobile and my wife and kids are getting poor service with Alltel. West Central Wireless, a local provider, offers no roaming coverage in the states bordering Texas, but I need national service. That limits my choice to Sprint/Nextel

I'll have to cast a vote for Verizon. I've got two phones and an aircard and have always been impressed with the service. My buddy and I worked New Orleans last year. I had uniformly good service with Verizon, while he had a lot of problems with poor signal strength, dropped calls and cross connected calls with Cingular. On the plus side, he has Rollover minutes so he went into the storm with several thousand minutes to burn.

Have had mixed experience with Sprint/Nextel (I am on Sprint side of the track) but overall can not complain. The coast to coast no roaming charges is great and if i go over my 800 out of network minutes the cost is just $5 per each 100 minutes over and the next month cost will automaticly drop back down to contracted amount. However the wireless card is barely faster than dial-up and sometimes will not even connect while showing bars on service meter. There are large dead spots in downtown Miami. That was very inconvienant but for the most part service is O K.

In their Jan 06 issue Consumer Reports released the results of a cell-phone service survey of 50,515 subscribers in 18 major markets. Cell phone companies were ranked on their perfomance in four areas: no signal; circuits busy; dropped calls; and static.
Verizon got the number one ranking in 17 of 18 markets. (They were beaten by US Cellular in Chicago, where they came in second.) Cingular was ranked last in 8 markets and next to last in the remaining 10. Nextel ranked last in all 6 markets in which they were included. T-Mobile came in second 12 times. Sprint was solidly in the middle.

I have been with Nextel for years, It works great for me, Anyone wanting my Nextel number let me know, I am on GMAC Plan and its only $105 per month, unlimited minutes both ways, radio and web service unlimited, and unlimited foot massages. Work's for me! Ive had them all like everyone else, but Nextel by far is the best in my opinion!

No loyalty here. Using 2 Cingular cell phones and Verizon for my wireless internet. Spent several months in NOLA. We did not have any problems with Cingular or Verizon.
