hey Dave, I tried that the other day and the row of shingles I was counting disappeared under the ridge row. How do we handle that?

I'm all about the Fat Max

2 Fat Max 35 footers. One has a Tape Dolly on the end. I can stand on a peak and accurately measure the face of the slope without taking a step.

1 Fat Max 100 tape with 3to1 reel-in feature. Use this to measure ridgelines. Hook it on, walk the line and then flick it so the clip comes loose and reel it in.

1 Fat Max laser. For interiors only.

Man. That's about 200 bucks of measuring stuff. Throw in the $20 leather belt, $35 side pouch and $10 tape holder and it adds up. But I feel real good about the accuracy of my measurements.

I don't know if I'll ever shell out for a Disto because I'm too afraid I'll drop it off a roof.

Need to find a roofer that can lay one up correctly. They hardly ever use the midspan 3-4-5- method anymore. That way the roof does not look like a snake when viewed from gable end to end.

Now Ray, binoculars are always available, (LOL) and then there is the swag method.

BTW did the shingles disappear on both slopes?

Hmm.  Wheel or Tape????  I would love to use a wheel but I use a tape.  Reinspection of claims is a **** and I prefer to be right on the money - TAPE!!!!

Guess no one ever remembers that you can count shingles for the length and for the run. Maybe they did not teach this in the 3 day schools? 3 tab shingle = 36" divided by 3 equals 12" or 1 foot for each tab. ( Make sure the are not 39" ones) Can even be done from the ground if necessary.

The run is 5" exposure to the weather, times the number of exposed shingles, divided by 12 and you have the length of the run. Used to work years ago, before any of these new fangled items. (Of course we have all of them too, just to make sure we counted correctly)

First thing I was shown when I got up on a roof.
