You wouldn't have a $30,000 difference, because State Farm typically has a maximum field authority of $10,000 and you would have to call in to your Cat Site Manager and explain a specific loss to get authority above that when settle in the field.  You can upload your photos on the State Farm air card on site, the manager is looking at the same roof you are, and gives you authority.

My manager told me they know some mistakes are going to happen, they just don't want you to keep repeating an error that you have been corrected on.

Sounds like a lot of wasted time uploading photos, letting the field manager review and then let you complete your estimate and cut a check, in the mean time you wait around in the driveway when you could be scoping more losses. Sounds like a micro managed military operation where no real volume can be done. There is only so much daylight each day, it does not make and sense to waste time on anything. That is just inefficient...

If the claim is under 10K you just settle based on your own authority.  If it is a larger claim, you could get authority from your manager without having to upload photos, that is not mandatory.  I am responding to the concern of the carrier disagreeing with your decision to total a roof.  When you hit a gray area, take your photos first thing, have the photos uploading on the air card while you are measuring.

The benefit of closing in the field is the fact that you don't have to mail a letter to the Insured with their check later, and you submit a single closed file report.

Sounds like you had a bad experience with State Farm - I don't view them as micro manage / military.  And they always pay.  I have worked for insurance companies that went bankrupt in '92 and '94, State Farm is financially strong.  They aren't going through the grief Allstate is after Katrina, they kept paying flood claims even after NFIP ran out of money.  They are just a rock solid company.  Your results may vary.

JGardener suggest we move our post re laptop desk to this thread, so here is a copy an paste of recent post.

I found an inexpensive laptop desk for my vehicle. Found it at jeniko.com for about $50 for the basic model. great alternative to the $250-400 models readily found on the net. They have more elaborate models for more money, but the base model is easily adaptable to a no-holes installation and is made of quality materials. Just thought I would pass this on in case anyone is interested, and was as frustrated as I was trying to find one.

Just curious as to how you adapted the base model to a "no holes install".  I've got a full size pickup, if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Gary

Pretty simple really, The base has 4 holes, used one of the holes and ran the bold from the passenger seat floor bolts through it. I used two stove bolts as legs on the other end of the bracket just for added stability, I also use a bracket for a cieling electrical box and a wire tie for a side brace to the other seat floor bracket for side to side stability. Desk was $50 bolts and brace $2, took 15 miutes to install. I drive a '06 Corolla, Hav also had it in my Jeep Wrangler. I'll be happy to send you pics if needed. I know this sounds somewhat "rednecked", but its a clean install and puts my computer right beside my steering wheel, gives me clear view of Delorme without having to look away from the road. Also alows me to check email at the local panera bread without rerouting wires every time.
