Greetings seasoned adjusters.

My company is willing to pay for pretty much any insurance designation that I'm willing to take; they pay for EVERYTHING - books, study aids, exam fees, etc.

I can't decide which way to go though - general insurance, associate in claims, CPCU (which seems to be a ticket to management in my company) etc.  I love adjusting most of the time, and think that I want to stay in claims for a while, eventually moving from the ticky-tacky <25k stuff I have now to burn downs, etc, but I'm not sure the right way to go about doing that.

Does anyone know how many states in which a Florida adjuster license is reciprocal?  I've heard Texas license is 32. Thanks for your input.

Homer before I became an Independent Adjuster I was a staff adjuster with Crum & Forster and I was a staff adjuster with Farmers Insurance Group.  The designations that Jim mentions are the ones that you will have to have for your company career in claims.

Larry, "focus" can be a tough challenge through the circle of life.  People say that one's mind is a sponge to absorb all life has to offer.  Mine never got saturated, but the struggle at this point in my circle is to minimize evaporation.

"Focus" can be such a maligned process, while mentally trying to apply it, our eyes at times prevent it; while our peers demand it.

I to have a designation with all the "..RAs" I can find to subscribe to, plus my current most coveted designation as a member of DRRGC.  Have a look at http://dumoine_rg_club.tripod.com

My focus is clearly on when the ice may go out up there, to allow me to play in the mud with my toys on land and also to squint a bit to focus on the beautiful trout in the clear waters of the lakes.

The best way to become an independent or cat adjuster is to get a job as a property adjuster trainee with a carrier like State Farm, Nationwide, Travelers or any large insurer. I worked for 3 carriers auto, property, cat adjusting and reinspection program, the insurers sent me to all the schooling, corporate training all while being paid. After about 6 years as a staff adjuster then I left to become an independent. If you think you can take a 2 week Vale course and become an adjuster you are mistaken. It is like any other profession it takes years of training and on the job experience to become a good adjuster, after 10 years of adjusting I learn something new every day. Most carriers are staffing up due to the weather forcast, there are many opportunities available.

As for designations the AIC and CPCU are the best one to have, it takes 4 years of schooling to get a CPCU, like a college degree in insurance.

My residence is not in Texas but Texas appears to be the best state for Licensure.  How would I go about obtaining a License from Texas.  Thanks in advance.

rhida, you appear to live in Florida.  You need to get your Florida license which is reciprocal with Texas.

Thank you Wes.  I do have my Florida license - I was thinking of obtaining a non-resident license for Texas, since Texas is reciprocal to 32 states.  And also, I have a son in SC and I can not find any good training in SC to obtain an Adjuster's License.  Do you have any suggestions?

thanks again,
Nita

Does he have any current experience or would he be starting from zero?  He could come down to Florida for a week long vacation and attend any of the 3-4 day classes that are offered around the state with your license presented to you at the end of the class.  If he needs adjuster training then I can only recommend the well known schools such as Vale.

He will be starting from zero. I've sent him training material from the school I attended here in Florida.  Thank you for the guidance - I will have him pursue the Florida license.

The general idea that I keep seeing is that you can take a 5 day class (TX and FL?)and get your IA license.

This blows me away. I am licensed in the state of Alaska and had to apply for a Trainee's license first. The only way to do this is to be sponsored or apprentice to an IA firm. The trainee portion takes a minmun of 6 months and only when you have shown that you are somewhat competent, can you take the IA license test.

As for classes, I have been to Vale (3 week course) and pulled a Property Claims Law Specialist designation from the American Educational Institute. Of the two, most have only heard of Vale, but the knowedge gleened from both have served me well. Additionally, being certified through State Farm and Nationwide, seem to be well worth the effort they took.

I talked to a few State Farm People and according to them, State Farm only reconizes two desgnation, CPCU and AIC, but that could be no more than hersay.

Best of luck.
