I'll weigh in right now, Tony. I don't want pay, benefits, etc. "stable". I'm in business as an "independent" adjuster because the sky is the limit. Stable and standardized is the last thing I want. I had that for too many years along with a regular paycheck every other week. That's a great way to never get ahead. We went round and round about this on CADO a couple years back when someone suggested we be unionized. If that is what you're talking about, the plain truth of the matter is that we are self-employed people. Most of us are self-employed because we choose to be self-employed. Most of us earn far more (at least when we are working) than we could hope to make as staff adjusters. Most of us prefer to be able to say "No" to an assignment or have some control over when we have had enough and choose to take a break. If the "standardized", "stabilized" fees and benefits are too low, I intend to work as a wildcat. If they are too high, the insurance carriers are at perfect liberty to refuse to use our services. Just how is "standardized" and "stabilized" supposed to benefit us? And, for those of us who have been in the insurance industry for awhile know, when Washington gets involved with regulating the insurance industry it's like giving a monkey a gun. You don't know who's going to get hurt, when they are going to get hurt, or how badly they are going to get hurt, but someone is going to get hurt. If we intend to organize (as Dave Hood was suggesting) it should be OUR organization, not organization from a third party to whom we have to be explained.

Steve, Thank you for your opinion. As I said right now all that is going on is people are talking and looking at options. There is nothing definate and no one is doing anything. As information comes available it will be put out for evereyone to read and voice an opinion on. And you are right as our own group we are huge, and can do a lot of good for ourselves. It just needs to have a direction for all to see and benifit from. I would love to be able to get hooked up in a lagre group that can do major medical insurance for independant adjusters and their families. Just my thoughts. I never judge a book by it's cover till I am thru reading it.

Good topic. Great comments. Seems things are coming around again. As they will again and again. After leaving staff to be independent and just recently going back to staff, I would have to say that in these posts are my reasons. It is very difficult to be an IA now and has been for 3-4 years for me. There was enough work, but it was always a **** shoot on wether I got the good storm or area. For instance in Charley, I was in Cape Coral with lots of leakers and first time adjusters were in Punta Gorda with totals. Go figure. They did not want those claim and I did, but no one would listen. They made alot more than I did and good for them. I ended up working those claims anyway, but on a daily rate...lol. The real funny thing is that they left so much money on the table. Somehow, in my suspicious mind I think that was calculated and planned by the powers that be. With all the requirements, gas, not being compensated properly for my experience in comparison with others with less, I elected and almost felt forced to go back to land of milk and honey. Now it's base pay plus Cat and per diem. Hotel, Airline, Amex and Car rental points along with the other benefits are what motivates me now. Someday I will retire and hopefully find that IA lifestyle still there. Then I probably won't care that much.

Probably my last post on this particular thread. There is an organization in place called the National Association of Self-Employed (NASE) through which many of the benefits you refer to can be gotten at a fairly reasonable price, at rates akin to group rates. There may be other organizations that serve the same self-employed community.

I do belive that issues With IA's Vendors, Legislation, Licensing, Profesionalizm, Training, Certifications, etc Certainly can be issues that a National Association followed with State organizations can Be and stay on top of! At the Moment and reading alot of the threads, I can see there are some bvery important issues with Independants as Myself. Not saying there wont beissues within an association, I just think as a WHOLE we would have a MAJOR VOICE, with concerns, Regulations, Licensing, Reciprocitie's and all other issues, SPECIFIC TO INDEPENDANT CATASTROPHE ADJUSTERS. In the Mid 80's i was involved in FAPI (Florida association of Private investigaters) And helped to Re write the Legislation and Licensing procedures, within a few years Many States have adopted the Legislation and Licensing Procedures, if there were greiviences with Specific Vendors, or Non Payment, Profesionalizm, or whatever The association had a "BIG STICK" and I think it brought alot more integrity to the Industry and Helped to maintain the Fee schedules as a whole. SOON, this association was a leader in Training and helped states to adopt certain regulations to KEEP integrity in ther Industry, One in Specific NO ONE WHO WAS A FELON COULD GET A LICENSE! and alot of other things. it is Definately something we should Put together I feel!
