Hope this is the right place to post about lodging issues. New here.

During Wilma, I helped 23 adjusters find lodging (and 2 campers) at decent rates. I have a knack for it I guess, because I have renting experience for my own rental houses and my B&B. I "kind of" reverse the process--no motels, toooo expensive for an adjuster trying to help others. Anyhow, I have several rooms in the Mobile, AL area to rent to professionals at a reasonable rate. So if you're with Pilot or another locally based company, and looking for a really nice weekly or monthly deal, e-mail me at chasehartone@yahoo.com.

$175/week ($50 refundable deposit) and $590/month ($100 refundable deposit), no lease, no first month for adjusters representing a company. Thanks, should have posted that.

The house is 2,000 sf and recently remodelled--new carpet, walls/trim/doors newly painted,...washer/dryer,...like home. Common great room (17'X22') with fireplace, large all-electric kitchen.

One woman, non-smoker occupant already, so I guess will be looking for same.

e-mail or call for further info.

Charlie

BTW, has the issue of finding fast, decent, and affordable lodging been discussed at length since this forum started? I happen to think it's an important one, especially during a catastrophic event--primarily, hurricane--and adjusters and Cat service companies both, are losing money. Okay, you've got a camper/travel home. Where do you park it when every space is taken up for a $1,000 per month whack?

If you're looking for a motel/hotel room, look to pay over $100 per day if you can find something available while fighting with all the other entities pouring in--not to mention the locals who are out of home and know about ALE. As a business man (meaning you, ladies and gentlemen) shouldn't you maximize your take-home by minimizing expenses--or should that be, minimize expenses to maximize profit? Whatever.

"Hell," you say, "I'm making $500+ per day Daily Rate. What's to worry?" Well, we could put it many ways, but a $2,000+ per month loss over say, ten months of storm work (compress or expand those months to your work ethic) is a nice downpayment on that new cruiser you've been wanting to travel all those storm miles. But the real loser, I say, is the company (I use to do these kind of studies in a past life--logistics, planning, flow charts...yuck).

To be continued only if you want and I have the time. Kind of boring anyhow.

Are you saying that you are an "agent" on call to assist us when a storm hits and will find us RV spots or houses on short notice anywhere in the U.S., (in safe, quiet neighborhoods)  for a reasonable fee? Yeah, that might be of interest to say 100% of us. No offense, but if you can walk the walk, that's great. But I am dubious to say the least. The safe quiet part is very important to us.  Please don't take that wrong, because I'll be your best customer if you can produce.

Fair enough.

No, I definitely do not want to be an agent--unless you're working the Mobile, AL area (say 50-60 mile radius). I have investment properties and if I don't have any rooms available, I can probably put you in touch with someone else. I don't want the repeat experience of getting calls during scopes, "Are you the landlord guy...? "

I do know RE investors--or friends of friends--in other parts of the country. During Wilma, I contacted a property investor back in Mobile and asked who he knew in South Florida, called that guy, and he put me in touch with another who had three empty houses (all 3-2s, some slight damage). I worked out a "hands-off" deal with him, promised to fill the rooms with professional types (that was/is key) and collect the rents. In turn, no utilities charge, no lease, prorated rents...room mates changed as others left the scene. In addition to that, I had put other feelers out and things balooned to several other options which I passed on to those who called.

I broadcast the rooms available through my Administrator, who in turn, sent out e-mails to all the adjusters under her umbrella. E-mail me and I'll be glad to give you her phone number (or a number of one or two of the other adjusters). I also put notice in the HELP rooms. I understand the doubt but just keep in mind that this sort of thing is like water-off-the-back for me--no big deal because I've been finding renters and fixer-uppers for years.

Charlie

PS: I wouldn't hesitate to buy a house to work a big-storm aftermath. If the return-on-income and price was right, why not? Another option would be to get two or three other adjusters together on a deal. And yes, I did live rent-free.

I am not a rental agent, I am an Insurance Agent with an Adjuster hubby and that has made me sympathetic to the cause.  I just automatically start searching for lodging resources for big events nationwide.  If I find a block of rooms at the local ext stay or a nice vacation rental then I'll book them and then put the word out that I have them.  I can't always help everyone but I have been pretty successful in finding "affordable" lodging.  More details are on my website.  I think this is a very valuable service to adjusters.

Here is the link to Temporary Housing Nationwide posted on the Temporary Housing link on www.claims-portal.com. The carrier I worked for used Oakwood Corporate housing not only for our housing in many cases but for ALE claims Nationwide for insureds. They located the communities, negotiate the short term leases or month to month leases, will bring in the furnishings and handle the utilities for insured's needing ALE or adjusters needing housing at the time of a cat. This would save you the normally outrageous prices charged by hotels. They basically customize the rental to your specificiations on furnishings, length of lease, utilites, and phone service.

We travel in an self contaained RV, with Satellite internet, TV, Generator ect. It is hard for me to imagine anyone trying to find Hotels, apartments, or housing in a catastrophe. But thats just me. Certainly nips the need for lodging in the bud, for us anyway!

Something to Think about?

Good deal, Lisa. And very imaginative. Put my B&B on your list (per web site--more a vacation rental with shared kitchen/laundry room/great room). Since Ivan, south Baldwin county, Alabama, we've put up a slew of adjusters. My personal preference when away, is sharing a home with a couple of other adjusters.

Lisa,

I remember all the postings you made helping a bunch find housing.  Thanks, even though I didn't avail myself of your services.

Nice necklace.
