Did it go a little bit like this. Ding Dong. Hello Mr. Homeowner, I was just in your neighborhood and noticed you had hail damage from my truck. You see my truck don't ya the one with the Tx license plates. (mind you this is IL) Well Mr. Homeowner let me tell you what I can do for ya. I'll get you a brand new roof, all new siding on four sides, gutters, soffits, fasica, downspouts, fence painted, window screens replaced, a/c combed out, and cover your deductible. How's that sound. Gee Mr. Honest Roofer, what do I need to do. Just sign this here paper, and we'll meet with your adjuster, cause we know how insurance works, and will get you your maximum benifit under the policy. No don't worry about reading it, it just says that we can meet with your adjuster, that's all.
How come people will sign up with a roofer in a split second, but adjusters have to jump through hoops with their attorneys to get them to sign a Proof of Loss or a Non-Waiver.

I have not called my contractor yet for cancellation. I am exploring the idea and will be doing so in next couple of days.

I dusted off my old Black's Law Dictionary (law school days, JD'92) and found the definition of OMBUDSMAN as...
an official or semi-official office to which people may come with grievances connected with the government. The ombudsman stands between, and represents, the citizen before the government.
Usually, the government will not get involved in personal disputes (except through the court system) and that is waht we had in this scenario, however you are seeing more stuff like you had in Illinois where they may be trying to cut things off before it gets to the court situation. Your advice to seek something like that was well-offered since ANYTHING is better that going straight to court!

The contractor could claim lost profit if the homeowner breached the contract. Something to look at anyway.

1. Did this home improvement/insurance restoration contract have a dollar price in it at the time you signed the contract?
2. Were you given a Right to Cancel paper stating your rights to cancel within 3 business days of signing?
If question 1 is NO. There there is NO contract. It's completely invalid and just a worthless piece of paper designed to mentaly make you think you have a binding agreement.
If 2 is NO, then again you do not have a valid contract! Cancel already!
CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL
Why?
Becuase this contractor isn't using a valid way to solidify a contractrual agreement.
All the other things poeple are bring to light about this issue may be valid but they are also mute, if it's NO to either of the above questions there is no contract.

I never heard from old contractor and giving my work to another company.
I have one more question, I never got the extension to complete the work in writing. I was suposed to tell the insurance company by June 1st if I plan to do the repairs. I called my claims manager in may and informed him that I will be doing the repairs and I will need more time to complete the repairs. He told me that is not the problem. I never got it in writing.
Is it going to be any problem since I never got it in writing? I am hoping not.
