Is there a length limit to these things? I see that AdjusterJ says the A6 works to 300'; how about the A5? I'm currently doing all commercial work and had some pretty big buildings in Katrina, Rita & Wilma. I mostly used my wheel, but I've got a buddy who told me about the Disto. I've never used one, so any info on its limitations would be helpful. Thanks to all.

I get 300' on my ol classic and I have a sight that can be attached. There have been considerable improvements made. I would not be without one working commercial losses. Janice has the newer disto with the built in sight and loves it.

The A-5 is supposed to measure to 300 meters. Using the side mounted eyepiece sight, and red glasses, there is almost no building that cannot be measured, inside or outside. Using the +/- feature you can easily measure the distance between the columns of a building, and count them, or just move from one spot to another adding the measured distance (+) to what you have. Been using the Disto since 1998 and there is no better measuring device IMHO. Interior or exterior offsets are easily calculated by the use of the +/- feature. Also having a 100' loggers tape as you measure the exterior is a great help. You can measure to the break, measure the inset/outset with Disto, and keep on walking. Pull the tape and voilĂ the 100 ft metal tape retracts automatically. Now for moisture measurements, My preference is the Protomiter Survey Master, with a 4' wand that allows ceiling readings, also floor readings without bending over constantly. The readout is easily photographed for documentation. Expensive, but you almost always get what you pay for. Every tool we carry should be an asset in Time Management, accuracy and proper file documentation. You can never have enough tools, and used properly, each will pay for itself in a matter of weeks.

I thought I had it all figured out with Mapquest, until I got out there the first day to discover 80% of the street signs were no longer attached to their poles. Ding, ding, ding.....we have a winner! The light went on. This year I was ready with my new Magellan. What a time and money saver. Paid for itself in about 3 days. I worked K, R & W and in almost every instance it took me right to the insured's front door; very highly recommended. I currently have the Magellan Roadmate 800 and absolutely love it.

I've got the A5 and have been able to measure 150' on occasion, but never over 200' in the field. The other night, I tried shooting the beam at my neighbor's white garage door to get a read, but couldn't get the thing to measure over 200' (FYI: For those that don't know this, the laser tape measures best when the light is dim & rarely in bright sunny areas.) Am I missing something here? I've got logger's tape for when I need it on those extra long measurements.

I use a wheel for the long measurements and it works great. Not the small wheel, the one that is about the size of a frisbee. It has a trigger-type lever under the handle to lock in the measurement as you lift it to read it and a thumb press lever to reset it, so you don't have to bend over each time (although there is a reset at the read-out housing also). Also has a kickstand on it that can be deployed and retracted with your foot, so you don't have to lay it down each time you write your measurement. I bought mine at Home Depot for about $60. I think the brand is Lufkin.

Loggers tape is what I've always called it, so it may be called something different. It's just a big tape measure that gives me 300' to measure with. The tape material itself is a modified vinyl substance, so I don't have to worry about keeping it off the ground from getting wet (It doesn't rust like the pocket sized metal 100' tapes). Also, it has a big crank on it so I can reel it in quickly. I prefer to steer clear of the wheels, since a bump(s) can cause a gap in the overall measurement.

Just a quick follow up. I just recd my Stanley trulaser bought off ebay. Been running around my house with laser and tape measure playing and testing accuracy. Works great, even outside in sunlight, up to about 65'. Inside works like a dream. Cost me $45 on ebay with shipping. I understand the first step to recovery is admission, so here goes, Hi my name is Jim and I'm a tightwad. I'll never give up my $4 tape, but this thing is great. I'm sure I'll upgrade one day, but till then this is quite an upgrade. Well worth the agony of letting go of a few $$.

Gotcha; I've got one of those too (300" tape)...I had just never heard it called a logger's tape, but I'm with you now. I agree on the wheel, bumps can cause some small errors. I would never use it on small measurements, but I do a lot of commercial and it's nice when measuring a shopping mall, hotel, warehouse, etc., especially the exterior. Thanks for responding to my query.
