I have 20 years of claim exp. (homeowner's) but know very little about auto insurance. Cat adjusters use their persoanl auto for claims adjusting. I currently have a regular auto insurance policy w 100/300 liability. Should I have some kind of endorsment to use my personal auto for business use? If so how much does the extra premum usually cost? What are you guys doing with regard to personal auto insurance? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks I drive about 30,000 miles a year.

Just letting your auto carrier know that the vehicle is used for business should be enough. They will probably rate your policy higher due to the increased exposure -- number of miles above average, type of business. If you have notified them and they issue the policy, they are on the hook in the event of a loss. I suggest you notify in writing and with some sort of proof of delivery. If you hire or utilize employees of any kind, you should have coverage for non-auto & hired autos. As an example: if you hire some one to make appointments and they are driving their vehicle to meet you for whatever reason and are involved in a accident, you may be held liable.

Yep, simply call your auto insurance company and tell them you are self employed and use your vehicle for work. They will classify it as a vehicle for 'business use' and will ask you what percentage for business and for personal. The premium will increase but not by much. If you don't do this and you are involved in an accident while driving your vehicle for business the insurance carrier may refuse coverage if they have enough proof.

I might disagree. Transporting goods or people is one thing, driving lots of miles for your job is different. I'm not sure the carrier could refuse coverage in that situation. I might be wrong... Rates are high enough in my home zip-code without having to add anything else to the underwriting criteria. "By the way, Mr. Underwriter...I drive tons of miles in bad neighborhoods at all hours of the day and night...but my agent said it won't make my rate go up...right?" Perhaps an umbrella liability policy will fit.

I have my vehicle listed as for business use. While inspecting a vehicle for a carrier due to questionable liability, the vehicle owner pulled out of the driveway and struck me. She left the scene. Come to find out she had no insurance and her attorney said don't talk with anyone. Because I had for business use on my vehicle, the insurance company covered my injury as unisured motorist. The adjuster handling my file said that if it wasn't for that endorsement, they wouldn't even had touched this loss. I don't carry workers comp on myself, but I do carry auto insurance.
