What experiences has everyone had with their vendors when a roof was tarped and secured tightly along the edges?? Do they expect you to remove the tarp and assess damages? Or since it was tarped, write to replace with no way of knowing the extend of damages underneath? What seems reasonable?

I would ask for a few photos before the roof is tarped. If not, I look at the surrounding homes and debris in the yard. If I am still not satisfied, I will pay to tarp twice.

My experience.

 If you are suspicious about the repairs of the roof. The carrier should  have a list of roofers,  who they won't mind paying to take the trap off , inspect the roof, retarp and send you a report.

Well the Bottom Line is if in fact there were not damages, there are now with the tarp, and like Russ the area should tell the Tale! I dont Like removing FEMA or Professionally Tarped Roofs, However if it is Tarped and has a Few old Tires and Blocks Holding the Wal Mart tarps Ill take a look see! I had one During WILMA, and the Flat Portion of the Roof Was leaking CLEAN WATER, I lifted the Tarp and Found that the Homeowner had poured a pitcher of water on the Truss system Under the Awning. I looked at him, and I said HMmm, He replied cant blame me for trying, Of course I mentioned this in My Estimate and Notes!

One of the first questions you should ask when calling to make an appointment, is the roof tarped and if so, it will have to come off before I can inspect. Please have someone loosen the tarp so an inspection can be made. We will allow for additional labor to tarp it back. You cannot inspect damage with a blue tarp on the roof. I have had too many people tell me their roofer said the roof needed to be replaced when it actually only needed repair. Trust only yourself!

Bet ole Tom wants to see the photos of the funiture stacked out by the curb also.   Hell Tom what do you do if they dont have photos?

My carrier would require you at least pull up a side or edge of the tarp and peek/photo underneath.  Otherwise how do you know there's any damage?  Collateral damage only goes so far...  I had an engineer once that recommended roof replcmnt but he didn't even pull the tarp up...!  Needless to say the engineer had to make a fast reinspection.

Any respectable carrier will bear the cost of confirming the damages. Either pull the tarp yourself and call a contractor or roofer to retarp it or have the homeowner do it if they are able and agreeable. (last resort) Either way, the carrier will likely not pay you for an inspection of the roof if the inspection did not happen. Photo documentation is everything here.
Always carry some simple hand tools and a screw gun. You will save alot of time by being able to uncover it when you are surprised by a tarp being there. Otherwise you are re-scheduling and coming back another time. It's easy to call a roofer or contractor back out if you don't feel comfortable making the tarp secure again.
Have you seen some of the posts on this site talking about not getting paid for claims work they have "completed?" Usually, if you get right down to it, its going to come back to something like this. Making an assumption about what is under a tarp, or whatever assumption one might make without having good photographic documentation.  Still, some don't understand why the carrier won't pay their invoice.
Good question- go prepared and always be sure of the damages you write. It will save alot of looking at your shoes when the questions come your way!
