I am looking for some suggestions for a laptop, printers, copies and scanners.  I am looking for equipment I can use as a catastrophe adjuster.  I worked the Katrina storm for a couple months last fall and another couple months in MN.  I want to invest in equipment for the next storm season.

I use the 4215xi hp office jet all in one for a printer, copier, scanner for the Cat Storms.  It is easy to travel with, since it is small and light weight.

I use Dell 6400 lap top (dell will provide you with a at home service, that is why I got it); the best reckognized computer by many pro adjuster is Toshiba, but it could be pricey. If you have not yet purchased your equipment, there are lots of sites on line where you can found what you need
Expect to spend 2 G, for a decent, above average pakage (computer, all in one printer, software, cables and accessories.)
Good Luck

I'll set a theoretical budget  of 2000$ ---
you can get 2 basic Dell laptops for 1200 or so (so you have a spare - or you could get one decent laptop for $8-900 and keep the change) , 1 HP all in one printer for $100 (printer, scanner, copier), a Sony 6.0 camera for 200, Delorme program is $100, various cords, paper, accesories, ink cartridges, memory sticks, camera batteries etc. - about $200 -- this $1800 plus $200 for tax.
Stretch the budget a few hundred more bucks to include a nice power inverter, a computer desk for the vehicle (Ram-Mount products are awesome), a personal portable dvd player and/or ipod for times when you get bored and you should be set.

You can spend less if you look around, or you can also spend much much more if you want.  I dont spend much - i use a $900 hp laptop with an AMD processor, an aforementioned hp all in one -- ($100 at wal mart or Sams.  i have 3 of them and haven't worn one out yet).  My big splurge last year was a Sony H1 camera, but because my firm has gone to paperless files now -- it too is useless except for pleasurable use.  The images are too big to email 30 at a time like you do with a paperless file.
I normally use less expensive gear because it will piss me off less if and when i bounce it off the pavement accidentally, however i've had good luck so far with the durability of my gear

Another cheap substitute is get a laptop mount from eBay.  I got one from this guy and it works great!  It's made from stuff you can get at Home Depot.  Look thru the hundreds of photos he has - note all the police cars that have this mount, especially the one car that was wrecked!  I got the Quick Disconnect, too and with shipping the whole thing was about $45.00.  Now it's more like $55.00,  He also now has one for larger laptops.

Go to http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6892955848&ih=013&category=116346

I noticed that someone is now selling the plans for what looks like the same design for about $3-4.00.  If you have access to a piece of plexiglass, just buy the plans - the rest is really easy and all parts can be found at Home Depot for just a few bucks.  For plans go to
http://cgi.ebay.com/Laptop-Mount-Portable-Holder-Mount-BETTER-DESIGN_W0QQitemZ9531883256QQcategoryZ47103QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Mine works great.  Best of all is the Quick Disconnect.  I can just unscrew it and toss it in the back if I need to.

Best,
Betrock

Costco is great for laptops... and they have a 6 mo return policy. I got a HP Pavillion zv600 for 699.00. Otherwise, Ebay is definitely the place to go. Also, www.overstock.com has bulk office supplies at great prices.

I use a Toshiba laptop ($1000), and two Canon inkjet printers.  Why Canon?  They make excellent printers with the lowest ink cost.  The one in the car is a Pixma MP750 that prints, copies and scans.  Unlike the HP's it has a document feeder that will make multi-page copies or pdf files without manually feeding each page.  That's really handy when the insured shows up with a 30 page handwritten contents list, or just a bunch of receipts.
I use DeLorme mapping software with GPS, a Verizon AirCard for internet service almost anywhere, and pdf Factory software (free trial version) to create pdf files. http://www.pdffactory.com
