In various posts, I've seen mention of hiring local help to do everything from administrative tasks (phone calls, appointments, etc.) to hauling the ladder and setting it up.
I'd like to see some discussion about this, including where to locate such temp. help when arriving at a cat site, and what sort of pay is negotiated.

There are many reasons to engage an interested, competent, qualified assistant.

1) The amount of claims received.
2) The type of claims received
3) The location of the claims
4) The severity of the claims
5) The requirements of the Carrier OR IA firm

Some of us have engaged the services of others to assist in contacting the insured, setting appointments, carting ladders, doing data input, reviewing files, having the assistant ride along to supply  knowledge and understanding of the "job at hand".

All of which leads to the successful training, mentoring and development of another true adjuster. This has been this adjusters Credo for many years, and I'm proud to say that every one on these "temps", who chose to pursue this profession has been very, very successful.

With respect to locating these individuals, that is an open forum. A, hairdresser, hotel clerk, grocery clerk, bartender, a hotel clerk, a carpenter, any one who has the desire to opt for the challenge is a potential candidate.

Some times I post a Bulletin in a camp ground, upon arrival, then anyone who is met, that will listen o the spiel, is a candidate. You never know who is interested until you ask.

With respect to pay, this initially is an hourly base, unless they continue to work with you and then it an be a % of your file. All subject to interest, performance and benefit to you, the adjuster,

May I interject a thought here, while any of those choices may be good if you're not looking for any kind of skill involved, I would suggest that at the very least you contact a local temp agency (Kelly Services, Appleone, etc.) for someone who is at least computer literate and qualified to represent you in a professional manner.  I don't think you'd want someone on the phone making your contacts for you that isn't capable of representing them self and you professionally. 
There are many qualified, capable people interested and available for that type of work locally, or not, who would provide you, the insured, and the insurer professional services.
Just because someone has the ability to dial a phone doesn't mean they will present themselves in a way you'd want to be represented!

Begging to differ with your opinion, the assistants that have been successful in my tenure have never come from a temp agency. These agencies charge a fee and while useful in many respects have absolutely no Knowledge of the Catastrophe ADJUSTERS NEEDS, DESIRES, WANTS, ETC,

I agree with Kat, there are a lot of sources for temp help/assistance.  He did forget the traveling carnivals, though.  We once hired on a midget, or to be more politically correct... a vertically challenged person.  Worked out very well, and everyone was just nuts over him.

I was gonna hire a stripper but, I thought that might be a little distracting. 
Besides that, what was I to tell the wife when she came to visit?

You might consider the halfway houses and drug rehab.  I'll bet that you can get some inexpensive help at either.

I would think that a stripper would be to expensive and might grab the wrong tool when asked.

I tried hiring the stripper but the loud music was kind of distracting so now I look for help at the plasma donation centers or the methadone clinics....always good help there. J/K    I went to the local community college and posted a notice and had pretty good luck. I also found that the hotel clerk is a wealth of information. As far as pay goes it depends on the area and the skills. I have always paid an hourly rate for admin/clerical stuff. I wrote my own estimates and just paid someone to take messages and print and assemble for a few hours a day between classes or between shifts.

Yeah, it's never a good idea to be covered in stripper dust when meeting with the insureds.
I try not to wear my acrylic stilettos or accidentally take out my pole, rather than my ladder,
to access the roof.

If you need clerical/admin assistance, you can post to [email=CAT-women@yahoogroups.com]CAT-women@yahoogroups.com[/email]. Some of the members are clerical/admin assistants and some have adjusting experience under their belts and are looking for an assistant type gig.

Another avenue to take is to go to www.elance.com. You'll find a bunch of qualified free lancers, in
many different fields, to help flesh out your "staff" and make CAT work a wee tad less overwhelming,
especially when it comes to the devil and details.

I try not to take out my pole either...I am very proud of it....but it would be very inappropriate to use my pole instead of a ladder.

I want to apologize if my original post sounded as if I was criticizing you or pontificating in any way.  I was only attempting to help, offer a suggestion or an alternative possibility.  This is a goal in my life, to assist, make things better, and offer what tiny bit of knowledge I possess.  This thread did get a bit off course, and I just wanted you to know that I never intended to make you feel that I was taking a "shot" at you, or your post.

LOL    Thanks, Lee, I'm hoping that if the winds hit just right, the tide is at its highest peak, and if we all get together at the same time and simultaneously do the "spin" method (of measuring), that we might just get a little water event here!!
 
Its been progressivly raining harder all day, turning much cooler and getting gray and gloomy!  As I drove across the tunnel to Norfolk it was getting hard to distinguish the bay from the sky, both being nearly the same shade of gray, white caps in the bay and on the other side of the tunnel, at least 7 miles of traffic backed up heading west!!!  (do ya think people are vacating or is that just the whole navy base let out early?)
 
Any way, I'll keep you all posted from a bird's eye view here in Hampton Roads!!

Another good source of "informed" assistance would be to "check-in" with your local agents office and ask if they can recommend someone.  They may have Part-Time staff that could help out.  Or, call comeone like me!   [;)]
