Wendy -> Useless trivia (8/9/2006 5:05:20 AM)

I tried searching the archives for the previous trivia questions to attempt to revive it.  I thought it was a fun forum.  However, I could not locate it so I am starting this one.  Whoever answers the question correctly gets to ask the next question.

What is the only crime defined in the U.S. Constitution?

Treason!

But I would ask that CATdawg post the next trivial question.  Something tells me that he can be very trivial. lol

Ray, am I that transparent? LOL

OK, here goes...What's the origin of the word "plumbing"?

AggieAdjuster -> RE: Useless trivia (8/9/2006 1:25:06 PM)

The Romans had the first real plumbing system; water was brought to Rome by aqueducts and distributed to homes in lead pipes. . .the name plumbing from the Latin word "plumbum" for lead??

CATdawg -> RE: Useless trivia (8/9/2006 2:21:44 PM)

Jay, you're right about "plumbum". Lead's designation "Pb" on the periodic chart of elements has the same derivation. However, plumbing systems predate the Romans by many centuries. On Crete, extensive terra-cotta piping has been found that is at least 4,000 years old.
I used to find lead plumbing pretty frequently behind old plaster and lath walls doing renovation work in the 70s in DC. Haven't seen a whole lot of it since.

The correct answer is indeed Treason, Article III; Section 3.

AggieAdjuster -> RE: Useless trivia (8/9/2006 10:53:58 PM)

so was I right about the lead or is there something else to it?

Here is two for you:
First...any month that begins with a Sunday will have this day in it?

Second: What is the original meaning of the word "jiffy" as in "back in a jiffy"?

Hints:

On the first: Grab a calander and figure it out...:)

On the second: it is a measurement of...

Big Bob -> RE: Useless trivia (8/10/2006 11:06:38 PM)

Don't need the calendar. (As one who suffers from triskaidekaphobia)  Thank you Catdawg for correct spelling.

FRIDAY THE  13th.

Old southern expression:(wag) knife full of peanut butter? LOL the instant you lick the knife you will cut your tongue on the jiffy.

PvtNvestigator -> RE: Useless trivia (8/11/2006 1:42:01 PM)

Friday the 13th is correct...!

As for the second one...jiffy is a measurement of time (1/100th of a second). Therefore, the phrase "back in a jiffy" meant to return really quick...
