Gale, not only is it an emotional issue, but a rather large financial issue. If we had all programs available on our laptops, your looking at $5,000.00 + per year for estimating programs. It seems that adjuster's are more financially burdened each year and our pay scale remains the same as the year 2000, maybe less. More equipment equals more out of pocket expense. When will it end.

Tom, without question the adjusters keep coming up with the short end of the stick. It would be nice if everyone would supply you with the estimating software they required. I am 55 and I expect it will be those following me at HRI who will see wholesale adoption of the Open Standard concept we have been actively promoting since 2000. Now that ISO may have a vested interest in keeping old proprietary and locked claim formats as the norm who knows what that will do to the adoption of the Open Standard concept. If they want to make the Xactimate claims file structure the Open Standard that will be find with the rest of the vendors.

Ray is right (at least in part) that the carrier has abdicated and especially in their promotion of Closed and Locked Claim File formats. This is totally a carrier issue and not the fault of any estimating software vendor. The other golden rule states, “He who has the gold makes the rules.” By the way now no one will be saying SF owns an interest Xactware because that would mean ISO would have an ownership role with SF.

Tom since you see this issue as being a financial issue/burden how is the carrier benefiting from the extra money you are forced to spend on duplicating perfectly good solutions. Follow the money trail they say to find motive.

Gale, maybe you know the answer. I was told years ago that Xactimate was developed at the behest of SF. SF worked closely with Xactware to develop a program that would give them all they wanted.

There is really not any difference on any of the four software programs to be used as a tool to estimate insurance losses.

These tools should be used by knowledgeable estimators like the tool they are; to do the math for the persons doing the input and the persons reading the estimate. If the software prices were infallible then regular claims would  not be handled in the following manner ....

"I will do any job you send me in the following formats : Any format , just send them."

Alan per a family member of the founder, perhaps a brother or cousin told me that was a misconception and that it was Farmers that first contracted with them to make an adjusting version of their software and not SF.

Ray it is the “knowledgeable” term that trips up the system. Software today in many industries is used in hopes of using the “unknowledgeable” to do the task. Someone is over selling the power of today’s estimating software if they make that claim. Of all claims property is a hard one to cookie cutter.

Gale,
This is the first mention I have seen about "open standard".  In posting #43 I made reference to the idea comparing it to the way accounting & pos software works.  Where can I read more about the open standard that is proposed and what is being done to promote the development of it?

Rick, some references on CADO are dated. Go to the CADO search feature and type in just two words, open standard. I found about 30 hits. We have been out promoting to the carriers to think about requesting their vendors supply them their claims data in an unlocked and defined Open Standard. Just got off the road promoting the Open Standard and am ready to crash. Later.

Perhaps we should revert to handwriting estimates. It may save a lot of time and $.
