hello,

i am looking for a

roof pitch gauge
shingle gauge

i do not care to buy from the tool belt guy or haag. any body have another source or location to purchase these items.

tool belt guy only takes paypal for credit cards, paypal is not a firm i will do business with.
haag is way too high for their shipping and handling of a small plastic item.

i am in texas, so anything local here to purchase or on the internet that takes credit cards is great as well.

thanks to all

Haag has an aluminum shingle gauge. About $20

Pitch gauge from Sears for about 6.95 with 2 slides to measure the angle on two roofs without resetting the gauge.

We have those plastic sheet 3-1/2 x 7-1/2 thing-a-ma-bobs that I made several years ago that I would glad to send anyone (within reason) just send me a mailing address to send it to.  Its good for gable roofs and some hip roofs, does not supplant a real roof pitch gauge.

Haag Engineering is about the only business that I know of that produces a reliable shingle gauge. Price is around $20 as stated above.  You can get the pitch gauge that most everyone uses at Home Depot and/or Lowes for about $7.00. Research the Roofing and Construction Forum on this site because someone posted a link to a very good pitch guage.

I like the ones at Home Depot better.  We sometimes give them away as prizes in our classes.

Two days ago I got the latest version of the Haag Shingle Gauge.  It is made of steel, not plastic, and it cost $20.00 plus about $6.00 shipping for the Gauge and a lanyard.  It arrived in three days.

I have one of the Haag gauges and have tried it in class on many types of shingles and find it far superior to the old one (not that is a hard thing to do).  It has its place.

Here is a link to Tajima Tools, who make a very snazzy pitch gauge - very expensive too!

Just pay for the shipping and save your reciept for you taxes.  By the time you waste your gas driving to Home Depot, you will have covered the shipping cost.

Haag doesn't sell pitch gauge just shingle gauge.  Home Depot doesn't sell shingle gauge just pitch gauge.

I would guess that the "tool belt guy" you dislike is CustomToolBelt.Com that sells the "CatManDo" belt and equipment.  I have ordered from them in the past and I did not have any problems.

Just so you are clear Ranger,

I do not dislike the tool belt guy. I do not like paypal. Type in paypal screwed me in Google and read story after story. I do not transact business with anybody that uses this system for payment collection. It’s very simple. Nor would I make a special trip over to pick up one item at home depot or any of the big box retailers. I have enough projects ongoing that I am out and by a retail location to purchase these items. I typically look for the guys like tool belt guy to purchase. They are small shop owners and I try to frequent them for items. His payment methodology precludes me from purchasing.

Thank you to the group for the insight, direction, and opinions. In the end i will find these products some how, some where. I just went online to purchase a gauge from Haag and the price is 20+1.65, no mention of shipping today. I guess i will have to call and see what the real price is for this item, or maybe it is a roulette wheel of pricing.

Just curious about the use of the pitch gauge since in my 13 years of roof inspectons, I have never used one on a claim, nor had anyone suggest or recommend that I use one.  There are basically 3 degrees of steepness (normal, semi-steep, billy-goat), and a similar number of options in the estimating programs for add-on costs.  In my opinion, casual observation gives you your steep factor and the risk photo is going to depict it for the examiner.  How many of you use one?  And can you comment on the added value of its use?

Since there is often a point of departure where we have to pay a roofer more money per square or for fee bill purposes and some times these increments are graduated the gauge serves a purpose of accurately judging the slope they act as a means of documentation.  It helps determine which increment should be used.

I use a pitch gauge and shingle gauge on every roof that I inspect and I document this use with a photo of each. An accurate reading of the pitch is required information by several of my carriers. The shingle gauge assist me in accurately selecting the correct building material for repair/replacement. Being a detailed oriented person, I have difficulty just visually "winging it" because if I learned anything as a Private Investigator is that you better have some way to document your decisions, if possible. It's all in the details...

Racko,

I'm with you on this one from an IA standpoint.  If the carrier can't take my word on the pitch of the roof, we have much bigger problems than a $10-$20 per square steep charge.  Nor can I believe this thread generated more than a dozen replies.

I do however carry a pitch gauge and any time it is >=  7/12, I shoot a photo for proof to the examiner.  Working a fee schedule, that little charge could bump you into the next bracket, and if some bean counter tries to remove that from my estimate because "It didn't look like it from the photos,"  I still want to get paid on the full fee without any argument.

If I am running around a state other than FL (where I have a relationship with the vendors/carriers I work for), I take a pitch gauge shot on every roof to eliminate reopens.  It only takes a couple of seconds at the top of the ladder.  This is a common tactic for PAs and some contractors for padding an estimate.  I don't want the IAC to have to send someone else back to clean up my file and prove I was right the first time.

Lastly as I have found myself sitting at a desk recently, this is one of the items on my checklist.  "Verify pitch for steep charge."
